After walking through the door Harry, Ron, Hermione and Regulus found themselves on a giant chess board. "Wizard's chess it's can't be?" Ron asked as Regulus shrugged. "At this point I'm not guessing." Regulus said as he walked across the chess board and just as he was about to pass by a white pawn, all the lawns drew their swords preventing Regulus from passing. "Ok guess it is chess time." Regulus said timidly as he backpedaled to the trio. "Ok here is the plan Harry you will be the queen's bishop, Hermione you will be the King's rook while you Regulus will be the King's bishop." Ron said confidently as Hermione gave him a curious look. "And you?" She asked as Ron puffed his chest out confidently. "I'll be a knight." Regulus just rolled his eyes but didn't argue as each of them walked to the place Ron told them the piece in question got up off the board and walked to the side. "Alitte late to question but this isn't like regular wizards chess?" Hermione asked as the boys shared a look as a white pawn moved two spaces forward. "Only way to find out." Ron said and ordered a pawn to move and was promptly destroyed by the white pawn. "Yep just like regular wizards chess." Ron said in a whimper to which Regulus voiced everyone's thoughts. "Oh fuck me."
The chess game of death was rather stressful for the group but surprisingly Ron had managed to control the flow of the game so that no one got hurt but now it was about time to wrap the game up. "Wait a minute..." Regulus said as everyone stopped and looked at him since it was their turn now. "I recognize this situation. Ron you are making a sacrifice play aren't you?" Regulus asked as Harry and Hermione looked at Ron. "Yes once I make my move the queen will take me and then Harry will be free to check mate the king." Ron explained as Hermione shouted her protest. "Ron no!" Ron rolled his eyes and retorted. "Do you want to stop snape from getting the stone or not!" Ron snapped as Harry and Hermione didn't have a answer for that more alike Ron didn't let them as he moved to to open the path. "Don't move!" Regulus yelled as the white queen knocked Ron out before dragging him off the board. "Harry checkmate the king!" Regulus shouted as Harry and Hermione frown and looked at Ron's unconscious body on the side before Harry walked along his spaces before stopping and yelled. "Check mate." The king removed it's crown and dropped it on the floor at the same time the door opened. Instead of going through the door the group ran to Ron but surprisingly Regulus got there first as he dropped to his knees and slide next to Ron and pressed two fingers to his throat. "He is alright just knocked out." Regulus said in relief as he stood up. "Come on we need to get moving." Regulus said as he lead harry and Hermione into the next room where they found a dead troll.
"Not this again." Hermione groaned as Regulus sniffed the air and strained his ears. "Get moving now." Regulus commanded as he pushed Harry and Hermione into a run just as the both of them made it to the door a hiss was heard and out of instinct Regulus leaped back as a large creature landed next to the corpse of the troll. "Chimera!!!" Hermione screamed as Regulus leaped behind a pillow and managed to get a look at the creature. It had the body of goat, the head of a lion and a dragon tail. "Fucking shit." Regulus said as he drew his wand and rolled to the side and as his rolled managed to kick the chimera in the neck making it gag slightly as it raced to the other side of the room as Regulus vaulted to his feet with his wand at the ready. "GO I GOT THIS!" Regulus shouted as he started firing streams of red spells at the beast keeping it a a distance. "But we can't-." Harry started as Regulus dived to the side as the chimera and picked up some rocks in its mouth and threw them at him. "I SAID GO POTTER!" Regulus snapped as he sliced his wand down as three white blades shot from his wand. "Diffindo!" Regulus shouted as the chimera snarled and leaped to the side but the blade slashed side and hind legs making the creature roar in pain. Harry and Hermione used this opportunity to race into the next trail. "Alright kitty mix let's dance." Regulus said with a grin as he crouched and the tip of his wand glowed red. "Stupidly!" Regulus shouted as the spell rocketed from his wand and just as the chimera was about to run behind a pillar the spell hit the chimera's head stunning the beast and die to its momentum it slammed into the pillar loosen it as a idea struck Regulus.
"Expulso!" Regulus shouted as he clicked his wand in the direction of the pillar the chimera was stumbling away from but the force of the spell caused the pillar to crumble and collapse on top of the chimera along with part of the ceiling crushing the beast leaving Regulus panting as Hermione came back through the door. "Regulus I'm here to hel.... nevermind." Hermione stated as Regulus plopped down on a step and leaned back. "You go get Ron to the hospital wing and get Dumbledore I'll be here so they won't get out easy." Regulus panted looking at the door from where Hermione came from. "Are you insane that could be you know who!?" Hermione questioned as Regulus stood up with a groan still brandishing his wand. "Probably but still he will have to fight to make it out so less talky more runny." Regulus said as he walked past Hermione and positioned himself directly infront of the door wand pointed at the door as Hermione sighed and raced into the chess room.
Regulus stood there ready for a fight and slowly minutes went by and not once did he lower his stance. After what felt like hours Regulus heard footsteps behind him when Dumbledore's voice made Regulus relax. "You have done well lestrange now rest you have earned it." Dumbledore said as Regulus dropped to his knees as his vision went black as Dumbledore placed a sleeping charm on him temporarily.
Regulus shot awake in the hospital wing and practically vaulted out of bed. "Whoa easy there." Madam Pompfry said as she rushed over and made Regulus sit back down on the bed. "You were out for two days." She said as Regulus looked around and saw Harry unconscious in the next bed over. "I guess we was right on time." Regulus said as Dumbledore walked in. "That you were young Regulus." Dumbledore says as madam Pompfry does a quick examination of Regulus. "He can go headmaster." She says as Regulus stood up and changed out of the hospital robes and into his school clothes before he and Dumbledore walked out and down the hall. "I take you got Hermione's owl?" Regulus asked as Dumbledore hummed softly. "It appears that I encountered MS Granger as she was leaving the third floor and she explained everything to me and I must say not many witches or wizards would willing fight a chimera." Dumbledore said as Regulus shrugged. "Maybe but I'll do what I need to." Regulus said confidently as they walked into the grand staircase and rode a section of stairs until it reached the 7th floor. " Well humility is a blessing and a curse Mr lestrange and it also seems that the school as learned a little bit of what happened down that trapdoor." Dumbledore said as Regulus walked towards the the Gryffindor common room. "Well I hope this will gain me some acceptance." Regulus said as he rounded a corner leaving Dumbledore's line of sight.
