Jonas glared at Lucas with a displeased expression and said,

“I understand this isn’t the time for formal introductions, but you can’t just take my niece away like that. She needs to see a physician first.”

“Taking her to my estate where my personal physician is present should suffice. I have no intention of prolonging this conversation when she needs immediate care.”

Lucas felt as if he was losing his mind with Leila’s pheromones growing fainter. His unstable pheromones reacted sharply, causing the surrounding alphas to retreat due to the aggressive pheromones of a hyper-dominant alpha.

This was Jonas’s first encounter with the aggressive pheromones of a hyper-dominant alpha, and it took him by surprise. He, too, took a step back, prompting Lucas to speak with a sneer.

“Anyone who stands in my way from now on will be cut down.”

With that, Lucas found his horse nearby and swiftly mounted it, holding Leila firmly in front of him. He took off at an incredible speed.

Anna tried desperately to follow, but it was impossible for her to keep up. Jonas, seeing this, lifted her up and followed closely behind Lucas on his own horse. The remaining subordinates took care of the mercenaries’ bodies and captured the surviving mercenary before following behind.

Under the moonless night sky, two horses raced madly through the darkness.

Lucas, just inside the city gates, felt his pheromones becoming increasingly uncontrollable. He paused briefly to take out an inhibitor. He bit off the cap and poured the liquid into his mouth, then resumed his ride.

Jonas entered shortly after. The gatekeepers couldn’t distinguish who was who and thus couldn’t conduct a thorough inspection. Given that the Duke himself was moving, they feared losing their heads if they interfered.

While the gatekeepers were hesitating, Jonas quickly followed the pheromones. Anna, clinging to him, relayed information breathlessly.

“Velvet… Velvet Shadow… Spider’s venom… she said.”

“Velvet shadow spider’s venom?”

“That’s definitely what they gave her!”

Despite her confusion, Anna realized that Leila’s symptoms matched those of someone she had known. Clinging tightly to Jonas, she muttered.

“The symptoms are identical to when the madam passed away. High fever, unconsciousness…”

Jonas clenched his teeth at Anna’s disturbing words. He felt a deep frustration, realizing there must have been many bad things happening without his knowledge.

Determined to save his niece, even if he couldn’t save his sister, he drove his horse hard to catch up with Lucas. The gatekeeper at the Duke’s estate quickly opened the iron gates upon seeing Lucas approach.

Lucas, glancing back and noticing Jonas following, instructed the gatekeeper.

“Leave it open.”

Though he didn’t want anyone near his omega, he couldn’t stop Anna. Leila needed someone she trusted by her side, and that person was Anna.

Lucas had to face the painful realization that, to Leila, he was not as trustworthy or comforting as Anna. Despite the heartache, his immediate priority was to treat Leila’s critical condition.
