Darkness. Pain. Terrified. Adriane floated in empty space, suspended in the midst of air. Darkness surrounded her, wrapping her up in a suffocating cocoon. She could see nothing, hear nothing, feel nothing. She tried screaming. Screaming for the help Adriane knew she would never get. Her throat constricted, cutting off all noise she tried to bear. Empty. Frozen. Lonely. Images of the worst things in her life played before her in an unending stream of nightmares. She was forced to live it over and over again. Adriane's parents dying. Amber getting kidnapped. Being the weak, needy Alpha she was. Torture. Erased from life. Anger. 'I'll never get out of this hell hole,' she thought bitterly to herself. Color flashed and the nightmares played again, filling the air with horrible screams and snarls. She could hear flesh ripping, and slammed her eyelids down. Suddenly, the sounds faded, as did the color behind her closed eyes. Her hand twitched. Adriane opened her eyes, and stared down at it in confusion. Then, she heard a voice swirl around her.
"Adriane, please wake up," the voice sounded vaguely familiar. She heard a sigh, a screech, and a shuffling of feet. Her mouth lifted into a hesitant smile. Something good is finally happening! Wind blew her hair upwards, and Adriane got the sensation of falling. Her speed grew rapidly. She looked down, an saw a pin prick of white. It grew steadily, and soon Adriane was embraced in warmth and bright light.
There was a constant beeping noise that could be heard going off every 2 seconds. It was a low, mellow sound. She squinted her eyes, and shut them quickly, for the light on the other side was too much for them. Adriane groaned. It sounded hoarse and dry. Retreating footsteps stopped.
Jake's Point of View
"Can someone turn these goddamn lights off?" Her raspy voice sounded like it was coming from a smoker. Jake flipped the light switched off, and Adriane uncovered her eyes. Her eyes instantly found him as she examined him. "Jake?"
"Hey, drink some water. Did you know you are a big time mouth breather in your sleep?" Adriane sent Jake a scowl. She glanced at the tray connected to her bed before grabbing the water and giving it a small sip. She must of realized how thirst she was because she then chugged the whole cup down.
"How long was I out for?" She questioned, her voice still a bit raspy. She scrunched her nose a bit before clearing her throat a couple times.
"A week or so," Adriane's eyes widened a bit. He walked back over to her bed and sat in the chair next to her bed. "The doctor said that you had entered a coma. You awoke faster than most, probably because of your genes."
"I figured as much. How is everyone?"
"Everyone is starting to settle down a bit. As you can imagine, the pack was in hysterics after the attack. Dad's been trying to act strong, but you can tell it's really wearing down on him," He started. "He... He's been acting different more recently. He's a lot harsher with everyone. Is actions towards things are uncalled for. We don't know what to do with him." Adriane's mouth pulled to the side and her eyes filled with worry.
"As for Amber," Jake hesitated. "I'm not sure if you know, but Amber was kidnapped that day the attack happened. The same day you went into a coma," He flinched waiting for a reaction. It never came. She just sat there looking at him.
"I remember that. I remember, pulling to my feet, with the little strength I had left. I had silently promised my mom that I wouldn't let my family be torn apart again. I guess I broke my promise," she said quietly. Her eyes diverted, her blanket becoming the focus of her attention.
"We still have search parties looking for her right now. Today's search party should be coming in soon to report," Adriane nodded her head.
"I wish I hadn't gone into a coma. I could've help you guys searched for her. It's my fault that Amber got kidnapped! I wasn't able to protect her! It's all my fault." Adriane whispered. Jake tensed, and he could tell Adriane noticed.
"It's not your fault. You couldn't have prevented going into a coma and you tried with all your might to try and protect Amber. Charlotte told me so. Don't beat yourself up," even as Jake said that, he knew some small part of him, on the inside, lurking in the dark corners, blamed Adriane for Amber being taken. He sighed, resting his head on the wall behind the chair. It wasn't exactly comfortable, considering the chair was pushed quite a few inches away from the wall. Jake didn't stay like that for long, because a doctor soon came in.
"Ah, Miss Adriane! Good to see you up. Jake, it would be appreciated if you left. Visiting hours are going to be closed soon. We'll keep Adriane overnight in order to keep an eye on her. She'll most likely go home tomorrow," he said, briefly looking down at his clipboard before looking back up to smile. Jake nodded before heading towards the door. He glanced over his shoulder at Adriane.
"Get some rest. We'll be back when you get discharged," and with that Jake left. He got a extreme case of déjà vu due to all the previous times he had left her room the past week. Almost like Adriane being awake was a dream that had answered his one of two wishes. Now if only the other had came true.
