Jake's POV
Jake walked into his father's office around 9 p.m. He found him hunkered down over his desk, reading some paper with a pair of glasses perched on his nose.
"Hello, son," Jake's father called out, not looking up as his eyes continued to dart back and forth as he read the page.
"Hey... Have you seen Adriane? She wasn't at dinner nor in her room. I didn't think anything about it yesterday, it wasn't that much out of the ordinary. But, she never misses twice in a row." Jake asked, heading over to a nearby bookshelf, his eyes skimming over the titles.
"You're not going to find her on pack grounds," said Alpha John lowly. Jake whipped his head around.
"Is she in town?"
"No."
"Well, where is she then?" Jake asked, heading towards his father's desk. His hands were shoved in his pockets as he approached. His father finally decided to look up. Jake flinched internally as he saw his dad's face devoid of emotions.
"Most likely in Chicago by now," he replied lamely. Jake grew rigid, his eyes widening as he took in the information.
"What on earth is she doing down there? Did you give her clearance to leave? Is anyone with her?" Jake questioned. His father sat back in his seat with a huff, the leather groaning in protest. He ran a hand through his hair before plucking the glasses off his nose and pinching the bridge of it.
"I didn't give her clearance. Border Patrol linked me around 6 yesterday to tell me she was approaching the borders. I told them to let her through. She was completely alone," Jake stared at his father for a moment, contemplating on what to say next.
"If you didn't give her clearance, how do you know she went to Chicago? Why is she aiming to go there?" Jake could tell his father was getting irritated with his questioning by the occasional warning look he sent him.
"I don't know why she's heading to Chicago. I don't know her motive," Jake nodded along, accepting his father's words. Then he doubled back.
"So how do you know she's going to Chicago?" Jake asked again. There is was again; that warning look his father kept sending.
"She mentioned going there to me. I don't know why she would go. I advised her it wouldn't be good for her to go there. Yet, she still went. I've been considering kicking her out of the pack since. If she can't follow her Alpha's demands, she has no place being here," Jake looked at his father in shock. Kick Adriane out of the pack? His dad had to be going insane!
"But she's family!" Jake sputtered out. "Have you sent anyone to go get her? She must not know that her leaving could get her kicked out! We have to go tell her what's going on and I'm sure she'll-"
"Enough," Alpha John's voice boomed out. Jake instantly snapped his mouth shut. "Adriane knows perfectly well that she could get kicked out for what she has done," Jake lowered his head. Adriane couldn't have known. She would have stuck around. She must have had a serious motive for her to leave.
"Has... Anything happened recently that made her leave?" Jake asked his father. His father looked at him a moment, seeming to thinking about what to say to Jake. Was his father hiding something? Jake pushed that thought away. Of course his father wouldn't hide anything from him. He was next Alpha after all.
"No, of course I'm not hiding anything," Jake looked off to the side.
"Would it be okay if I go to Chicago and try to talk to Adriane? I'm sure I could convince her not to do anything stupid enough to get her kicked out of the pack. I know she doesn't want to leave," by the end, Jake's voice had started to grow softer and quieter. Silence stretched across the room. For the longest time, everything was silent.
