"God, you killed me here," he shivered walking back in.
She quickly closed the balcony door and followed him into the living room. "Do you want some coffee? Leave after a few minutes or you might run into Yejin," she offered.
He nodded, dragged a chair to the kitchen island, and sat down. She swiftly moved around popping a coffee packet in the machine and warming some milk.
"Did you consider all the public shows we will have to do as engaged couples?" he asked, with a lazy yawn.
She poured the milk into a cup and held it under the machine. "I looked more on the personal gains. If this works for both of us, I am sure we can pull through some public drama," she passed down the cup to him and poured a glass of milk for herself.
"So as agreed, when any of us fall in love or find a real potential partner, we can cease this contract," he repeated the clause. She nodded. "And it's going to come with a lot of lies," he said, sipping on his coffee, "like we could have just pretended to be dating, why engage?"
"It's more stable than dating I guess," she said, leaning on the counter, "Your parents will be more assured. And being engaged gives me an upper hand against mom. It removes her suspicions of me hiring a boyfriend,"
He snorted, watching her roll her eyes and gulp down the glass of milk. "You didn't hire a boyfriend, but a whole fiance for a fact," he said leaning forward and reaching his hand across the island.
"What is it?" she flinched back.
Yeonjun turned away and pulled a tissue from the box near him and handed it to her, "You got a milk mustache," he said, clearing his throat. Snapping the tissue from him, she quickly turned away and wiped her mouth. "Thanks"
Silence took over them, as she faced her side to him and he sipped on his coffee. The very first rays of the sun were starting to hit through the curtains and kitchen window. Yeonjun stood up, grabbed his coat, and started to make his way out. She followed him, standing a few steps away from the door.
"Goodnight," he wished, wearing his shoes.
Hyemi smiled, staring at the clock behind him, "yeah, good night," it was five-thirty in the morning and none of them had slept the whole night.
"Sweet dreams,"
"Sweet dreams you too,"
"Sleep warm. Keep the windows closed,"
"I will."
The conversation exchanged in soft tones, with none of them wanting to say goodbye. His hand lingered over the door knob but hesitated to pull it and her going up and down on her toes, hands clasped in front like a prayer.
Yeonjun nodded, "Thank you for the coffee,"
"You are welcome," she shifted between her legs, her gaze still on him. She had spent the whole night with a man alone, writing a fake engagement contract; as a lawyer who should be writing legal documents, she was trying to make love look legal. But weirdly, she wished this man could stay a little longer because when he pulled open the door and left, it felt like darkness took over that bright apartment again. Ironic, cos the sun had just started to rise, marking the beginning of a new day. She locked the door, holding back a yawn, and scrambled to bed, inside her warm blanket.

A minute later Inhye's call was ringing, Hyemi jumped from the bed and accepted the call. She propped the phone on her bedside table and sat down on the floor like a lost child. Her hair was a mess, puffy face from sleeping for so long, and crusts around her eyes.
"What do you need help with?" Inhye's voice echoed.
"How do I get ready for a date?" Hyemi broke the words quickly.
Inhye gasped, holding her hand over her mouth. Inhye's wedding ring reflected on the light, creating a little glow on her face. Hyemi looked down at her ring, an oval-shaped diamond, seated over gold. It fit her perfectly.
"A date? You are seeing someone finally!"
Hyemi held her hands up like in surrender, "Wait, let me explain." she propped her left hand in front trying to show the ring.
"That's a pretty ring, where did you get it from?" Inhye asked opening a face mask packet.
"Inhye."
"DON'T TELL ME ITS A PROPOSAL RING?"
Hyemi nodded. Inhye's scream through the speaker almost felt like her eardrum could burst. "It's a fake engagement,"
"With who?"
"Choi Yeonjun,"
"Holy shit. You are so sneaky, bitch." Inhye cursed, "Do you think you are the main character? Fake engaging someone?"
Hyemi scoffed, "I don't have time to explain. Are you gonna be of help now?"
