"Was that really necessary, Sasuke?"
Izuna Uchiha mumbled at the figure in shadows before him. Leaning on the metal bars separating the two men, Izuna ran his fingers through his long, coal-black hair.
"Yes."
"You know, you gave Marcus a lot of unnecessary trouble. He spent two days at the court trying to diminish that Shizune's credibility-"
"That's what I pay him for, Izuna."
The figure in the shadows spoke with an eerily calm voice.
"Well, he did manage to keep everything under control. You really shouldn't be too reckless here, you know?"
"This place has made you soft," Sasuke Uchiha spoke in a chilling whisper. Izuna got a glimpse of his cousin's face through a single ray of moonlight illuminating the dark cell.
"This place is miserable, you know? Being undercover is hard just because of how boring it is."
The silence that came from behind the cell was expected. Sasuke could be a man of a few words.
"Anyway, are you doing okay in there? I tried to sneak you bigger food portions, but everyone is so alert-"
"Progress on the plan?" Clearly, Sasuke had no interest in discussing his accommodations.
"We'll get you out, Sasuke. It is crucial that you get cleared by the psych evaluation. Otherwise, they'll classify you as a death row criminal, which will make lying low much more difficult-"
"Will my good doctor come back?" The sinister cheerfulness in Sasuke's voice sent chills down Izuna's spine. Even after knowing him all his life, something about his cousin always unnerved him.
"No, Sasuke. She is institutionalized. I heard they're sending you a replacement psychiatrist. Please don't pull the same tricks again. Marcus can only justify it once."
"We'll see," Izuna could sense Sasuke's smirk by his intonation. Still, he decided not to push too hard.
"Sasuke, I can't guarantee that I'll be stationed outside your cell. Guards are assigned randomly, and I can't arrange any changes. I checked with the warden, but he's pretty strict with security."
"I don't care who guards my fucking cell, Izuna. I'll be out of here before I get too comfortable."
"I know, but, um, maybe try to see this as a bit of a vacation? Time away from work, maybe? Look, what happened with Itachi-"
"You talk a lot," Sasuke walked out of the shadows, his straightjacket covering most of his torso. His face had several cuts and bruises, and a lot of his body was bandaged up from the day of his arrest. It wasn't a pretty sight.
"I just worry about you, Sasuke. He was your brother, after all-"
One glare from Sasuke was enough for Izuna to bite his tongue. Deep inside, he wasn't sure what Sasuke would have done to him if he wasn't behind bars and completely restrained.
"A-anyway. I'm going to head out before they start asking questions. I'll see you again during the scheduled time."
Izuna took his cousin's silence as confirmation as he quickly left the room. He had been posing as a security guard at the mental facility for the past several months. It was all Marcus' brilliant idea; He knew that after his boss's imminent arrest, his best course of action would be to fight the death penalty punishment before even thinking about the trial. In other words, Sasuke would have to spend time at the asylum.
A good lawyer is always worth any sum of money, especially for people like the Uchiha.
Sasuke's arrest was always a big possibility, so preparations were put in place ahead of time. Izuna was selected for the undercover mission to serve as a contact between his cousin and the outside world. His brother, Shisui Uchiha, was left behind to take over Sasuke's affairs for the time being. It was all thought out.
