The school bell rang, and the familiar rush of students flooded the hallways. It was Friday afternoon, and everyone was ready for the weekend—including Mono and Six. But instead of rushing off to their separate homes, they had plans to hang out at Mono's place. His parents were out for the evening, and that meant the two of them had the entire house to themselves.
As they walked through the neighborhood, the autumn sun was already starting to set, casting long shadows across the sidewalk. Mono had his usual slouched posture, hands in his hoodie pockets, while Six was a little bundle of energy next to him, practically bouncing as she walked.
"Bet you can't beat me there," she said suddenly, a playful grin lighting up her face. Without waiting for a response, she took off running ahead, her short legs pumping as fast as they could go.
Mono sighed, but there was a smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. "You always cheat," he muttered, jogging after her with his much longer strides. In no time, he caught up, easily overtaking her with his tall, lanky frame. He didn't even have to run—just a fast-paced walk was enough to leave Six struggling behind.
She scowled, glaring up at him as they neared his house. "You've got an unfair advantage, you know," she huffed, pushing open the front door once they arrived.
Mono chuckled, brushing his messy hair out of his face. "Not my fault you're so short."
Six's eyes narrowed, but there was a spark of mischief in them. "Oh, you think you're funny, huh?" She kicked off her boots at the entrance, then shot him a wicked grin. "We'll see about that."
Before Mono could react, Six grabbed one of the throw pillows off the couch and chucked it at him, hitting him square in the chest. Mono blinked in surprise as Six quickly grabbed another pillow, holding it like a weapon. "Come on, big guy! Think you're tough?" she teased, swinging the pillow again.
"Oh, so it's like that?" Mono smirked, grabbing a pillow of his own.
What followed was a full-blown pillow war in the living room. Despite the fact that Mono towered over Six, she was quick and scrappy, dodging his attacks and striking back with surprisingly sharp aim. She used her small size to her advantage, ducking and weaving between the furniture, while Mono tried his best to block her relentless swings.
At one point, Six managed to climb up onto the back of the couch, giving herself some much-needed height. "Now what?" she taunted, holding her pillow above her head, ready to strike.
Mono just grinned. With his height, all it took was one step forward and he gently yanked the pillow out of her hand with ease, leaving her weaponless. "Nice try," he said, raising his own pillow for a counterattack.
But instead of hitting her, he just tossed the pillow aside, laughing at the ridiculousness of it all. Six stared at him, arms crossed, before a small smirk broke through her usual tough exterior.
"Truce?" she asked, still perched on the back of the couch, a bit out of breath.
Mono nodded. "Truce."
They both collapsed onto the couch, breathless and grinning like a couple of kids. Six kicked her legs up on the coffee table while Mono sprawled out, taking up most of the space with his tall frame.
After catching their breath, they turned on the TV. They weren't watching anything specific—just flipping through channels aimlessly. Six leaned against the arm of the couch, tugging her jacket tighter around her as she settled in. "Your place is so quiet without your parents here," she remarked, her tone softer now.
Mono shrugged. "Yeah, but I don't mind. Gives us space to hang out without anyone bugging us."
Six nodded, glancing over at him. "Thanks for letting me crash here, by the way. It's better than going home." She didn't elaborate, but Mono understood. He never asked much about her family, but he knew she liked being here—where it was quiet, safe, and they could just be themselves.
Suddenly, Mono's phone buzzed. He reached for it, checking the time. "You hungry?" he asked, standing up and heading toward the kitchen. "I can make something."
Six perked up. "Only if it's pizza."
Mono grinned. "Of course." He pulled out a frozen pizza from the freezer and tossed it in the oven, the familiar smell quickly filling the room.
While they waited for the pizza to cook, Six wandered into the kitchen, resting her arms on the counter as she watched him move around. "You know, for someone who's like ten feet tall, you're pretty decent at making pizza."
Mono gave her a playful nudge. "And for someone half my size, you're pretty good at eating it."
Six rolled her eyes but couldn't help the small smile tugging at her lips. Despite all their teasing, there was a comfortable warmth between them. It was the kind of banter that came from being best friends for so long—knowing when to push each other's buttons but also knowing when to stop.
Eventually, the pizza was ready, and they sat down at the small kitchen table, each grabbing a slice. They didn't talk much as they ate—just enjoyed the food and each other's company.
Later, when the pizza was gone and the night had gotten darker, they found themselves back in the living room, this time scrolling through Mono's music playlist. Six picked out a punk song she liked, cranking up the volume. They both just sat there, the music filling the room, the playful energy of earlier now fading into a comfortable quiet.
Six stretched out on the couch, her head resting on the armrest, while Mono leaned back in the corner, still flipping through his phone.
"You're lucky I let you win that pillow fight," Six muttered, closing her eyes.
Mono chuckled. "Sure, Six. Whatever you say."
They sat there in silence after that, the kind of silence that wasn't awkward or uncomfortable, but one that felt natural—like two people who didn't need to say anything to enjoy the moment.
And for the rest of the evening, that's exactly what they did—just enjoyed the peace of being together.
