The school bell rang, signaling the beginning of the last period of the day—P.E. Mono and Six trudged into the gymnasium, already mentally checked out, knowing full well that neither of them took this class seriously. The gym was filled with the usual rowdy crowd of teens who were equally uninterested in participating. Some were already kicking a ball around, others sitting lazily on the bleachers.
Six, as usual, was unimpressed. She looked over at Mono, who almost towered above her as they stood side by side. His height always gave him an advantage in sports, but Mono didn't seem to care much either.
"What do you think they'll make us do today?" Mono asked, nudging Six lightly with his elbow.
"Probably some dumb group activity," Six replied, pulling at the sleeve of her hoodie. She was never enthusiastic about P.E. but was here for the entertainment value that came from not taking it seriously with Mono by her side.
"Hey, maybe we'll get lucky and they'll forget about us," Mono suggested, flashing her a sly grin.
Six gave him a flat look. "You? With your giant target of a head? Not likely."
"Rude," Mono chuckled, pretending to be hurt by the comment.
The coach blew the whistle and waved them over to the middle of the gym, where they were supposed to play dodgeball. Perfect. Mono was about to become an unintentional ball magnet. Six could already sense it.
"Alright, team up," the coach called out, barely paying attention as the students lazily formed groups.
Mono and Six, of course, stuck together. Mono stretched out his limbs, trying to get loose, while Six just crossed her arms, uninterested in warming up. As soon as the game started, it was chaos. Mono, as expected, was an immediate target due to his height, and Six couldn't help but snicker every time a ball came flying his way.
"Duck, Mono!" Six called out, laughing as he narrowly dodged a ball aimed straight at his head.
Mono jumped out of the way, managing to avoid the hit by inches. "You could, you know, help me!" he shouted back, but Six was too busy laughing.
Despite their lack of seriousness, Mono's height and reflexes somehow kept him in the game, while Six, with her quick movements and relatively small size, easily dodged the barrage of balls being thrown at them. At one point, Mono managed to catch a ball thrown at him, though more out of luck than skill.
"I'm basically a P.E. god," Mono declared, holding the ball triumphantly.
"Yeah, okay," Six muttered, rolling her eyes, though she couldn't hide the amused smirk on her face.
The game dragged on with neither of them particularly invested, but they both enjoyed the ridiculousness of it all. By the end, Mono was sprawled out on the floor, dramatically acting as though he'd been taken down by the enemy, while Six stood nearby, barely winded.
"You're such a drama queen," Six said, poking him with her foot.
Mono looked up at her with a grin. "Gotta make it interesting somehow."
Once P.E. was over, they were more than ready to leave school behind for the weekend. As they were walking out, still sweaty from the chaos of dodgeball, Mono reached into his pocket and pulled out a crumpled twenty-dollar bill. He showed it to Six with a raised eyebrow.
"Look what I found in my pocket," Mono said, waving the bill in front of her face.
Six snatched it from his hand, inspecting it. "Where did you get this?"
