Mingyu had started living with a ghost of a person.Wonwoo's presence felt no less than his absence, rather felt more, which in turn, felt worse.
He had stopped playing games. He didn't cry every day, yes. But some times, Wonwoo would sit in front of the system, just to bawl his eyes out. Seungcheol and Wonwoo might have other things in common but this is what connected them to each other the most and the only thing that did, now. Because Seungcheol wasn't there in Seventeen anymore, not in any of their songs, not in their life. But he was still here; as a character in the games they used to play. If he tried harder, Wonwoo could hear those victory laughs, or loser's curses, or "Hyung will handle this" his hyung.
Jeonghan had once said, "Wonwoo needs to be taken care of". And they all did, beautifully. Mingyu, being the roommate, did it the most. Hoshi, oh Hoshi did it consistently from the very start. Yet, for Wonwoo, nobody did it like Seungcheol. Seungcheol was rough and tough with everyone at times, not even going easy on Jeonghan but he was so soft with Wonwoo, oh so soft. Seungcheol looked at him as if he wished to bubble wrap Wonwoo. And he did, he had him carefully wrapped, every bubble filled with his tender love and care.
Until Seungcheol, himself, brutally burst every single bubble one day.
"Are your glasses okay?", Seungcheol asks.
Wonwoo is checking his glasses in daylight because they seem a bit misaligned. He had kept it somewhere while sleeping, might have come under someone's weight.
"I...I can get them fixed", Wonwoo's grip on his specs tightens as Seungcheol continues talking, his familiar voice filled with familiar care stinging Wonwoo.
"You are the reason we lost our sight", Wonwoo looks at him with a burning glare, "Don't try to pretend to help us now".
It's not like Seungcheol was having an expression of happiness but his face visibly falls, "Sorry..."
And then he's continuing on his way.
Seungcheol is leaving. Again.
And he will be out of Wonwoo's sight much faster than he would be of anyone else's.
The realisation is heavy and it fills Wonwoo's eyes with tears, already making it harder for him to see Seungcheol.
"Wasn't it enough...?", Wonwoo speaks after a lot of contemplation and that causes Seungcheol to halt, "Wasn't it enough that I had already lost someone dear to me? That I had already lost a parent figure?"
"And this is worse", The younger could care less that he's now full-on sobbing with every single word, "Because Mom died and I can explain it to myself, it's life and it's inevitable but how do I explain this to myself? Huh? How do I tell myself that this wasn't in your control? That you didn't want to leave us...."
"How could you?! You promised....when mom died, you promised....."
"Wonu-ya", The warmth from Seungcheol's presence embraced him, "I'm here to take you back".
But Wonwoo didn't want to go. He wanted to stay close to his mom, now in whatever way that was left. He wasn't a kid, he understood that he would have to go and move on with life but right now, he was a kid, his mother's kid.
"I'm not telling you to not mourn or hurry up with it but this is causing you more pain. Your dad is getting worried. If you don't want to partake in any of the group activities, that's fine, you don't have to. But just, come with me."
"Hyung, I...want...her...back", His voice broke but before he did, Seungcheol gathered him in his arms.
Later on, when they walked towards the car, his hand tightly gripping the elder's, after Seungcheol convinced him, Wonwoo asked, "You will never leave me, right?", He knew it's a childish thing to ask but the child in him had always feel acknowledged and secured with Seungcheol.
"I won't."
"Promise?"
"I promise."
*****
Seungcheol can't help himself. He can't help taking quick strides and enveloping Wonwoo in a hug. Wonwoo might hate it and Seungcheol is so selfish for this but he feels the kind of peace he hasn't felt in three fucking years. The warmth of Wonwoo's body transmits to his.
Wonwoo doesn't hug him back but he also doesn't push him away. He is letting Seungcheol hold him and Seungcheol couldn't ask for more. Wonwoo cries and cries and cries. Tears also slip through Seungcheol's eyes but he doesn't draw attention to them.
"Why, why, why, why...", The younger keeps on repeating and Seungcheol, well, he only has words of apology to offer but he doubts that would make Wonwoo feel better.
Neither would the truth, would it?
Suddenly, there's a body literally pasted on his back.
Hansol has hugged them in such a manner that Seungcheol is sandwiched between the two men. There's weight on him from both the sides but it happens to be a good weight.
"Before Seungkwan sees us...", Hansol lets them go. The maknae also is in tears.
"Are you and Seungkwan....?" Seungcheol starts but doesn't complete. He has felt something but doesn't want to make a wrong conclusion.
"Yes, we are engaged", Hansol shyly flaunts the ring on his finger.
"Whaatt?????!!!", Seungcheol was going to ask about dating, because Hansol had been silently loving Seungkwan since a very long time and the whole Hip-Hop unit used to tease him a lot. But this is a surprise. He extends his hand to take Hansol's in his but he hesitates. Only when Hansol brings his hand forward and gestures him to go ahead, he grabs it and smiles widely at the feel of the metal, "Congratulations!!! I am so, so happy".
"May god bless you both", He pats Hansol's head lovingly. God, his maknae- maknaes, have grown up so much.
"So, did you also find someone?", He asks from Wonwoo, his tone teasing, in hopes that the younger would indulge him and they would be fine, even if it's just for a few minutes.
But Wonwoo only looks down and Hansol answers in his stead, "No. He even lives alone now".
"Why? Did Mingyu find someone?", Seungcheol wiggles his eyebrows.
Wonwoo's tone is cold again, colder actually, when he answers, "Mingyu lost himself".
