Anastasia stepped out of the office building, her heart light as she joined her friends for dinner. The laughter of her coworkers surrounded her like a comforting embrace. It felt good to be out again, reconnecting with her friends after spending so much time focused on her relationship with Elijah.

As they walked to the restaurant, she shared stories and jokes, her laughter mingling with the sounds of the city. The thrill of being with her friends reminded her of the woman she used to be, vibrant and free, before her world had narrowed to just her and Elijah.

When they arrived at the cozy Italian restaurant, the aroma of garlic and fresh bread wafted through the air, making her stomach growl in anticipation. They settled into a lively booth, their conversations a mix of playful teasing and excited chatter about their lives.

"Have you guys heard about that new bar opening downtown?" one of her colleagues asked, leaning forward with enthusiasm. "We should totally check it out next weekend!"

Anastasia nodded, feeling a surge of excitement. "Yes! I'd love that. It's been too long since we did something fun together."

As the night wore on, they shared plates of pasta and clinked glasses of wine, and she felt herself relax, the weight of recent weeks lifting off her shoulders. They laughed until their sides hurt, recounting embarrassing stories from their workdays, and for the first time in a while, she felt completely at ease.

Yet, amid the joy, a small pang of guilt tugged at her heart. She knew Elijah hadn't been the happiest lately. Even though he hadn't had any major tantrums in weeks, she could sense his underlying tension, his jealousy creeping in whenever she mentioned plans with friends. But tonight, she wanted to enjoy herself and not dwell on it.

As they finished their meal and the server brought over dessert—a decadent chocolate cake—Anastasia felt a wave of contentment wash over her. "This is amazing!" she exclaimed, taking a bite and savoring the rich flavors.

"Right? This place is a gem," one of her friends agreed, a blissful smile spreading across her face.

They lingered at the table, sharing bites of cake and laughing until the restaurant began to empty out. As they finally settled the bill, Anastasia's phone buzzed in her pocket. She pulled it out to see a message from Elijah.

Hope you're having fun! Can't wait to see you later. Miss you.

Her heart fluttered at his words. Despite everything, he cared deeply for her. She quickly typed back a response, assuring him she'd be home soon and that she missed him too.

When they finally said their goodbyes and she stepped outside, the night air was cool against her skin. She took a deep breath, her mind filled with happy memories from the evening, but her heart was already yearning to be back with Elijah.

As she arrived home, the apartment was quiet. She slipped off her shoes and walked softly to the bedroom, where she found Elijah sitting on the edge of the bed, his expression unreadable.

"Hey," she said, trying to keep her voice light. "I'm back!"

Elijah emerged from the bedroom, his expression shifting from neutral to wary as he took in her glowing demeanor. "You're back late," he said, crossing his arms, the tension in his posture evident..

"Yeah, we lost track of time," Anastasia replied, trying to keep the mood light as she hung up her coat. "Dinner was great! We went to that new Italian place and had the most amazing pasta."

"Sounds fun," he said, his voice lacking enthusiasm. "Did you at least check your phone? I texted you a few times."

She felt her stomach drop at the accusation in his tone. "I did! I was just enjoying the moment with my friends. I thought you understood that I needed this."

"Needed what? A night out without me?" His eyes narrowed, the possessiveness in his voice creeping back in. "You could have included me, you know."

"I didn't plan to go out alone, Elijah. It was last minute, and I really wanted to see them again," she argued, trying to keep her voice steady. "I've missed spending time with friends."

He stepped closer, his jaw clenched. "And what about spending time with me? Do I not matter as much anymore?"

Anastasia felt frustration bubbling within her. "That's not fair! You know how much I care about you. Just because I want to go out doesn't mean I care about you any less. We can't just be cooped up in this apartment all the time."

Elijah's eyes flashed with hurt and anger. "So, you want to go out, hang out with them, and leave me behind? Is that what this is?"

She took a deep breath, trying to keep her emotions in check. "It's not about leaving you behind. It's about having a life outside of just us. I love being with you, but I also love my friends. I want to have both."

"Right. But what if they start to influence you? You say you want kids someday, but what if they convince you otherwise?" His tone turned sharper, and she felt a knot form in her stomach.

"Stop it, Elijah! This isn't about them! It's about me needing a balance in my life," she snapped, frustration spilling over. "I don't want to lose myself in this relationship."

"Maybe you should think about what you really want," he shot back, stepping even closer, the tension between them thickening. "You can't keep going out and leaving me here, wondering what's happening."

Anastasia shook her head, her heart racing. "I'm not leaving you behind! Why can't you just trust me? I'm still here, aren't I? I came home to you."

"But what if next time you don't?" he pressed, his voice rising. "What if one of those nights turns into something more? I can't help but think about that."

"You're being controlling, Elijah!" she yelled, her voice echoing off the walls. "I'm not some prize to be won or lost. I need space to breathe, to have fun without feeling guilty about it!"

Elijah's expression hardened, and for a moment, they both stood in silence, their breaths heavy with unspoken words.

"Maybe I'm just afraid of losing you," he said quietly, the edge of anger fading slightly. "I've seen how quickly things can change, and I don't want to be the one left behind."

Anastasia softened slightly, feeling the weight of his vulnerability beneath his defensiveness. "I'm not going anywhere, Elijah. But you have to let me have my space. I want us to work, but it can't just be about you wanting to keep me to yourself."

He stepped back, running a hand through his hair, his expression conflicted. "I just... I want you to know how much you mean to me. It's hard when I see you having fun without me."

"I know it's hard," she replied, her voice gentler now. "But it's also important for me to have my own life. Please, just trust me. I'm not going to give that up."

"Fine," he said, his tone begrudgingly accepting. "But it's going to take time for me to get used to this."

Anastasia nodded, feeling a mix of relief and concern. "I'll help you through it. Just know that it doesn't change how I feel about you."

"Okay," he replied, his eyes searching hers for reassurance. "I just want you to be happy, but I also want to know I'm part of that happiness."

"You are," she promised, stepping forward and wrapping her arms around him. "Let's figure this out together."

Elijah held her tightly, but a part of him still felt uneasy. He needed to trust her, but the thought of losing her loomed heavily in his mind.

"Together," he echoed softly, even as uncertainty flickered in his chest.
