As they walked on the street, hand to hand. With a shared glance that spoke volumes, Anastasia hesitated for a moment, then took a breath. "Would you like to come to my place for a drink?" she asked, her voice slightly shy but hopeful.
Elijah's eyes brightened at the invitation. "I'd love that," he replied, a grin spreading across his face.
Anastasia unlocked her apartment door, a wave of warmth and familiarity washing over her. The cozy, dimly lit space was decorated with vibrant artwork and modern furniture, giving it a welcoming feel. She glanced back at Elijah, who was taking in the surroundings with an appreciative smile.
"Wow, your place is really nice," he said, admiring the cozy décor.
"Thanks! I like to keep it comfortable," she replied, closing the door behind him. "Would you like something to drink? I have wine, or I can whip up some cocktails."
"Wine sounds perfect," he said, settling onto the couch as she moved to the kitchen.
Anastasia poured two glasses of red wine and returned, handing one to Elijah. "Here you go. Cheers!" she said, raising her glass.
"Cheers," he echoed, clinking his glass against hers. They both took a sip, the rich flavor warming them from the inside.
"So, what do you do when you're not hustling in pool games?" she asked, settling onto the couch beside him.
Elijah leaned back, a faint smirk on his lips. "Um, I work in private security, but it's a bit more complex than that," he said, his tone suggestive but vague.
"Complex how?" Anastasia pressed, intrigued.
He shrugged, a hint of mystery lingering in his expression. "Let's just say I deal with... sensitive situations. High stakes, you know?"
Anastasia raised an eyebrow, drawn in by his enigmatic response. "That sounds intense. Do you ever find yourself in dangerous situations?"
Elijah's gaze darkened slightly, and he leaned in closer. "Sometimes. But I can handle myself," he said, confidence lacing his words. "It's all about being prepared and knowing when to walk away."
"Walk away?" she echoed, a mix of fascination and concern bubbling up. "What do you mean by that?"
He smirked, clearly enjoying the intrigue he was creating. "You'd be surprised how many people don't know when to cut their losses."
Anastasia felt a chill run down her spine, the thrill of his words igniting her curiosity. "So you're saying you deal with people who might not be entirely good?".
"Something like that," Elijah said, taking a sip of wine. "But enough about me. What about you? What do you do?"
"I'm an auditor," she said, her enthusiasm breaking through. "I examine financial records for accuracy and compliance. It's all about uncovering the truth, even when it's buried deep."
"An auditor? That sounds meticulous," he replied, intrigued. "Do you ever encounter anything... questionable?"
She hesitated, a shadow crossing her face. "I can't really discuss the details of my cases," she said, keeping her tone light but firm. "It's all confidential."
"Ah, a mystery woman," he said, a playful glint in his eyes. "I like it."
"Just part of the job," she replied, smiling. "But let's just say that I uncover things that aren't always what they seem."
Elijah leaned in, his interest clearly piqued. "You're teasing me. Come on, you can't leave me hanging like that!"
Anastasia laughed, shaking her head. "I really can't. But I promise it keeps my work exciting."
