After the heated exchange in the office, Elijah and Anastasia managed to calm down, but the tension between them still lingered, hovering like a shadow over their relationship. The rest of the workday passed slowly for Anastasia. She couldn't shake the discomfort from their argument, and the gnawing feeling that Elijah's jealousy had cracked something between them. As the clock ticked closer to the end of the day, she found herself replaying their conversation, wondering how they'd move past this.
When five o'clock finally rolled around, Anastasia gathered her things, bracing herself for what might come next. She texted Elijah before heading out:
Anastasia: I'm done with work. Gonna be home in half an hour.
There was a pause before he replied:
Elijah: Okay baby, I'm waiting for you.
She sighed, slipping her phone into her bag, her mind heavy with thoughts. The ride home felt longer than usual. By the time she reached their apartment, her stomach was in knots.
When Anastasia opened the door, she found Elijah sitting on the couch, staring down at his hands. He looked up at her, his face still clouded with the remnants of their earlier argument. But there was also something softer in his eyes now—a mixture of regret and weariness.
"Hey," he said quietly, standing up.
"Hey," she replied, her voice just as soft.
They stood there for a moment, neither knowing quite what to say, the weight of their earlier words still thick in the air. Finally, Anastasia took a deep breath, breaking the silence. "We need to talk about what happened."
Elijah nodded, but he looked uneasy. "I know. I messed up today. I let my jealousy get the better of me, and I shouldn't have accused you like that. I—" He hesitated, running a hand through his hair. "I guess I'm more insecure than I thought."
Anastasia took a step closer, her expression serious but gentle. "Elijah, I get that sometimes things can be overwhelming, but we can't have this kind of fight every time I talk to someone. We have to trust each other."
"I do trust you," he said, his voice strained. "It's just... I don't know, when I saw you with him, it hit me hard. I know I overreacted, but I couldn't help it. I keep worrying that I'm not enough for you."
Anastasia's heart softened at his words, seeing the vulnerability beneath his anger. She reached out and took his hands, squeezing them gently. "You are enough, Elijah. More than enough. But you can't let your insecurities get in the way of what we have. If you keep questioning me, it's going to drive a wedge between us."
Elijah's gaze dropped to their intertwined hands. "I don't want that," he said quietly. "I love you, Anastasia. I don't want to lose you over something stupid like this."
"You won't lose me," she said firmly. "But we need to be open with each other. If something's bothering you, we need to talk about it before it gets to this point. I love you too, Elijah, but trust has to go both ways."
He nodded slowly, the tension in his shoulders easing slightly. "You're right. I'll work on it. I don't want this to happen again."
Anastasia offered him a small smile, relief washing over her. "We'll get through this. Together."
Elijah pulled her into a hug, holding her tightly as if afraid to let go. "Thank you," he whispered against her hair.
After their heartfelt conversation, the air between them was lighter but still tinged with vulnerability. They decided to spend the rest of the night together, just the two of them, finding comfort in each other's presence. Anastasia suggested takeout, and soon, they were sitting on the couch, their favorite movie playing softly in the background.
