"So Chris, what do you do?" I ask him as we walk up and down the aisles of home depot in search of some door hinges.
He puts his hands in his pockets.
"Well, I used to work at a car auto repair shop, but I recently got fired. So, for now? I clean my apartment, go to parties and get wasted time to time.""Wow that sure sounds like something," I laugh with him.
"Yeah. What about you?" We arrive at the hinge section and start choosing a new hinge for my apartment.
"I just finished my first year of college, I also work a part time job at American Apparel, but mostly lounge around by myself. It's not as cool as yours, but it's still somewhat a life," I joke and smile up at him.
He smiles back, his mesmerizing blue eyes piercing through mine, and we stay like that for a while. I was the first one to break the gaze.
I look down at the ground and find the courage to ask him another personal question.
"What happened between you and Alicia?" I blurt out.
An awkward silence fills the atmosphere.
"Uh.." He scratches his head.
Wrong move, Lily.
"Sorry! Sorry. I don't mean to be nosy, I mean we just me yesterday and-"
"No, it's fine, Lily, I just had to think about something," he furrows his eyebrows and starts.
"I met Alicia at the repair shop where I used to work. And I guess we just hit it off. She was the first person I've actually had a real relationship with. Before I met her, well, I wouldn't say I was the most decent guy you'll ever meet." He halfheartedly joked.
A former bad boy turned into a loving gentleman. Cliché, but cute.
"She changed me for the better. We dated for 3 years. I loved her with all my heart, and I thought she did too. But then one day out of nowhere she calls me and says she wants a break. And it doesn't take a genius to figure out what that means." Chris looks at me with glassy eyes.
"It's been a month since we talked. Some part of me hopes that she will come back, but the other part says that she won't. I don't even know why she even wanted a break anyway. I honestly have no clue. It was just out of the blue, and I have no idea what I did wrong, I mean if she could tell me then I can change-" I stop Chris from rambling by placing both my hands on each side of his cheek.
"Chris, you're rambling," I smile softly at him.
"Yeah...yeah you're right, I'm rambling." He breathes deeply in and out and recomposes himself.
We buy the hinge and head out the door and hop back into my car. We arrive to the apartment in silence, and in no time, the door to my apartment is up and working again. We made small talk and jokes here and there, but mostly it was just silence as I discreetly watched Chris's biceps flexing while he was doing most of the work.
It's very awkward between us; I'm not the most social person ever and he's too caught up with his ex-girlfriend, plus we had just met yesterday. Once Chris finish fixing the door he prepares to leave.
"It was nice meeting you Chris," I stand awkwardly next to him while he grabs his phone and heads out the door.
"And I to you," he smiles sweetly.
"Thank you for fixing my door, even though you did break them in the first place." I giggle.
"No problem. Sorry about the hassle last night." He says.
I just shake my head and smile.
But out of nowhere he moves in closer and plants a swift kiss on my cheek. I blush lightly as he steps back, giving me a final wave.
When he reaches the staircase I call out towards him, "So, maybe I'll see you again? Or..." I trail off.
"Maybe," he gives a half grin and continue along his way home.
Shit. I don't even have his number.
