We walked silently following the dirt path created by the footsteps of others.
There was not a soul in sight. The only sound was that of the trees and leaves rustling in the wind.
It didn't take us long to walk down the path. At the very end of it was a small field of beautiful blue flowers.
A shiver ran up my spine as I walked through the small field.
This was the only place you'd find these flowers in the whole kingdom. Uncle Ayato had planted them here with my help.
I looked back the knight followed me no further. He seemed to understand now that we had arrived.
I turned away walking through the flowers and up to the centre of the field.
Kneeling down my hands brushed against one of those flowers.
"Hi mon I'm sorry I haven't been back in awhile." I whispered.
"Uncle and Thoma have been taking care of me and I'm still practicing my studies."
The trees rustled and a flock of birds flapped their wings as they flew above me.
"I've got a new knight now too. Which means I'll be able to visit you more often."
"I still haven't found any magic yet but I'm trying. Who knows... Maybe I'm just like you." I whispered.
I felt my heart swell up a bit.
"I miss you. A lot."
I couldn't speak anymore. I was scared that the next words that came out of my mouth would bring tears with them.
Instead I let go of the flower and looked up.
In the centre of the field was large white headstone with beautiful designs. It was the most magnificent stone in the garden. In the centre of that headstone was the following:
'In memory of our beloved queen, Kamisato Ayaka'
Mom...
I could feel my heartache.
How many years had it been now...
I couldn't even remember.
It felt as if no time at all had gone by yet here I was. I was no longer that little girl my mother remembered.
I could still vividly remember her. Her smile, her laughter, her kindness, it was all so clear in my memory. Although I had been young she was one person I would never allow myself to forget.
I brushed my hand against the headstone.
I wonder what she'd think if she saw me today or what kind of a person I would have become if she was still alive. I try everyday to live up to how she was, but I'm not her. I can only do what I can do.
I wonder what she'd think of Ayato...
A small smile crossed my lips.
She'd probably say something along the lines of... 'Brother you've gotten older! Stop working so hard or age will really catch up with you!'
I'm sure he misses her everyday too.
Her grave was incredibly well kept. Ayato saw that he personally went down to take care of it. A lot of the locals also put effort into maintaining it though. I remembered seeing them caring for the flowers in the times I had come down here.
It made me happy to know she wouldn't be forgotten.
She was the best queen...
I let out a soft sigh.
Please look after me mom.
I'll come back whenever I can.
I love you...
Getting up off the ground I looked at the grave once more before turning back to the knight.
"Shall we head back?"
For a moment he didn't reply. His head seemed to be elsewhere until he nodded.
I stepped through the field returning to his side.
The two of us stared at the grave for a few seconds.
"Thank you." I whispered.
"Its been awhile since I had the chance to come see her. I'm really glad."
He did not reply.
"Lets return to the castle."
Turning away the two of us began our walk back.
The walk back to the castle was silent. Not out of awkwardness but out of a strange sense of peace. Seeing her again had brought me comfort and I was just enjoying the brief moment.
By the time we had returned it was starting to get dark. Thoma had been happy to see there was no issues and the knight walked me back to my room after dropping off the books.
We currently stood just outside my doors.
"Thank you again." I said with a smile.
He nodded as per usual.
A thought crossed my mind as the two of us stood here.
I had been calling him my knight or knight all day. That wasn't exactly a name...
"Hey um I just realized I've been referring to you as a knight all day but you're not just a knight. If you don't mind could I know your name?"
He looked at me.
I couldn't see the expression on his face.
My heart was pounding a bit as I waited to hear what he'd say.
To my disappointment he only opened the door to my bedroom without another word.
"Oh..."
My heart deflated a little.
Of course...
"I understand... Goodnight..."
I stepped into my bedroom and as I did my heart stopped.
"Capitano. You can call me that."
My eyes widened and the door behind me closed.
