Alex... wake up... Alex... wake up,” a voice urged.
As Alex regained consciousness and slowly opened his eyes, he was surprised to find himself in an endless white space. He quickly stood up, staring around in confusion.
“Huh? Where am I now?” he wondered to himself.
No matter where he looked, there seemed to be no end—just a vast expanse of white with only him present.
“Alex,” the voice called again.
“Who’s there?” he shouted, searching for the source.
“I apologize for meeting you like this. I intended to see you sooner, but something came up,” the voice explained.
“I see, so you know me?” Alex asked, still scanning the emptiness.
“Well, of course. I’m the one who summoned you here, after all,” the voice replied.
“Huh? Did I die?” Alex asked, bewildered.
“How would I know that?” the voice responded, sounding confused.
“Haaa? But you said you summoned me here. This doesn’t feel like Earth…” Alex exclaimed.
“Ah, I’m sorry again. What I meant is that I summoned you to this world. You are no longer in your own world. This space is just a creation of my magic,” the voice clarified.
“Huh??” Alex was perplexed.
“To tell you the truth, your summoning is... how do I put this... mmm...” The voice hesitated.
“Wait, wait, wait... let me process this first,” Alex interjected. “So you summoned me to this world, which means I’m not on Earth anymore. And magic??? Is it like fireballs or card tricks?”
“Yeah, magic like fireballs. I also summoned you using my magic. Didn’t you notice?” the voice replied sarcastically.
“Haaa, it’s hard to believe, but I’ll bite for now,” Alex said.
“That’s great to hear! It makes it easier to explain,” the voice responded.
“Right, so what happened to my memories then? Is it a side effect?” Alex asked.
“Could be. I’m not sure since it’s a new spell,” the voice said casually.
“Wait, what?! Did you just say it’s a new spell?” Alex exclaimed in shock.
“Ahaha, I’m so sorry! I couldn’t help it. I love exploring magic, and it seems I created a different summoning spell. I’m not sure of the details since I’ve already paid the price,” the voice explained.
“What do you mean?” Alex asked.
“Well, I no longer exist in that world. It seems the spell took everything from me and consumed me whole, except for this fragment of memory. Don’t worry; I really don’t regret it. The spell works, and as a researcher, that means a lot to me,” the voice chuckled.
“Well, if you say so, I still feel sorry for you,” Alex said sympathetically.
“Don’t mind it. I’m just relieved that the spell didn’t harm you, aside from your memory. Hahaha, sorry!” the voice reassured him.
“Well, in that case, I humbly thank you for it. You mentioned something came up earlier. What was that about?” Alex asked.
“Well, you see... during the summoning session, the spell gave me a little information about you, which is why I knew your name and appearance. To be honest, I was shocked to find out that my new spell was actually a different world summoning. As soon as the session was complete, my whole body began to vanish slowly, so I had to magically place a fragment of my consciousness in this space. It also took time to prepare, which is why,” the voice explained.
“I see. Well, in that case, I forgive you. It’s not entirely your fault; it was accidental. What should I do now?” Alex asked, shaking his head.
“I’m grateful for that. I think that’s all the time I have left. I mean you no harm; I just hope you live well here. Don’t worry about anything else. Just enjoy what you do—except anything that could bring trouble,” the voice said cheerfully.
“Right, thanks, and I’m sorry you have to go like this. Please tell me your name,” Alex requested.
“It’s nothing special; everybody calls me the Mad Wizard. Hahaha, my name is Sage Lorenza,” the voice replied before vanishing along with the white space.
Alex opened his eyes and slowly sat upright, whispering, “Sage Lorenza…”
“Hooo, you’re finally awake…” someone said.
“Ehh? Who are you?” Alex asked, confused and startled.
“Hahaha, didn’t mean to startle you. My name is Reggy. I found you in the forest yesterday evening,” Reggy replied warmly.
“Oh, thank you for saving me,” Alex said gratefully.
“Don’t mention it! So, you don’t look local. Where do you come from?” Reggy asked.
As Alex prepared to answer, he remembered that he came from another world, making it difficult to explain.
“Well, I’m not so sure... the thing is, I don’t remember anything other than my name,” Alex said after deciding not to reveal the whole truth. In a way, he felt he was being partially honest.
“I see... you really don’t remember anything?” Reggy asked again, trying to glean more information from Alex.
“Well, I’m not sure, but all I remember is waking up alone in that forest,” Alex replied.
“Alright, let’s go with that then. You must be hungry. Let’s get something to eat,” Reggy said.
Alex smiled and followed Reggy, also introducing himself, although it felt a bit late. Something about Reggy's earlier words made Alex wonder—did Reggy know something about him?
At first glance, Reggy seemed like a talkative guy. Judging by his appearance, Alex guessed he could be around 37 or 39 years old. However, since their last conversation, Reggy hadn’t said a word, which made the situation feel a bit awkward for Alex. He glanced around while following him, taking in the details of the small wooden cottage they’d just left. The house was modest, with a cozy interior. It had a single ground floor with two bedrooms, decorated with various hunting trophies, a leather carpet, and displays of weapons like bows, axes, shields, swords, and even light armor. A couple of shelves full of books stood by the fire pit in the living area. For someone living alone, it seemed like the perfect little home.
"We’re heading to the nearby village. Follow me," Reggy finally spoke, putting on his robe.
Alex nodded, assuming they’d grab something to eat in the village. He wondered if Reggy usually dined outside his home. Reggy opened the front door and led the way down a path through the jungle, while Alex, still captivated by the view, followed closely. The house was perched on a cliffside, with the front door facing the edge. The path led through strange trees and plants Alex had never seen before. The landscape was mesmerizing, and the air felt fresher and cleaner than the forest he'd been in earlier.
Small wild animals darted around—like rabbits, except these had four ears, making them look more fascinating than cute. There were also squirrels with much longer tails, moving significantly faster than the ones back on Earth. Reggy noticed Alex’s amazement but didn’t comment, maintaining his silence as they walked.
"Mr. Reggy, how far is the village?" Alex asked after walking for a while.
"Hmm, not sure exactly, but it’s not too far. Once we reach the downhill slope, we should be able to see it," Reggy explained.
"Right," Alex nodded, trusting his guide.
After about 20 minutes, they finally arrived at the village’s front gate, guarded by two men in heavy armor, each holding a long spear. The sight gave off a distinctly medieval vibe, and Alex couldn’t help but feel like he’d stepped into another era altogether.
