A surge of adrenaline coursed through my veins. One heartbeat I was crumpled on the stone floor, my hands bathed in the metallic tang of blood; the next, I found myself latched onto the Alpha's muscular arm. My fingers dug into his unyielding flesh, my nails leaving crescents of raw, reddened skin in their wake as I strained to pull him away. I couldn't let him hurt the guard. It was I who made this mess. I had hurt someone.

The guard's eyes mirrored my terror as he fought for precious oxygen against the Alpha's iron grip. The Alpha's claws dug into the man's flesh, crimson rivulets snaking down his neck. I was torn between my screaming instinct to flee and an overwhelming sense of responsibility for the unfolding horror. I felt ensnared in a web of my own making.

The Alpha turned towards me, his gaze locking onto mine with an intensity that seared through to my very core. It wasn't the man who looked down at me then, but the wolf, a creature far more formidable and terrifying than its human counterpart. I'd seen his wolf before. Its gentleness had been soothing during our encounter on that rain-soaked night. But now, there was no trace of that softness left. Instead, raw rage blazed within those liquid gold eyes, a wild beast barely tethered by its human cage.

The animalistic intensity radiating from him sparked fear deep within me. Fear one feels when locked in a predator's gaze as it threatens to consume you whole. Against his towering presence, I felt insignificant. My heart hammering so violently against my ribcage that it felt as if it might shatter me from within.

My eyes locked with his, a silent plea dancing in their depths. I yearned for him to comprehend the unspoken message, to perceive that this man had not inflicted any harm on me and that I wouldn't stand by and let this happen to him. A menacing growl reverberated from deep within his chest. Its tremors pulsated through me where my hands clung desperately to his arm. I was terrified that if I released my grip, he would finish what he started.

His teeth flashed, canines sharp as daggers and just as deadly. The wolf lurking behind the golden orbs of his eyes hungered for blood, straining against the fragile threads of the Alpha's restraint. Fear seized me, every nerve ending within my body screaming a deafening warning. Danger was approaching, flee while you still can, meddling could be fatal.

The guard wheezed beside us. Words slipped past his lips in ragged breaths. Although I didn't turn to decipher what he said, the essence of his words seeped into my bones. A palpable fear of impending death suspended on a threadbare lifeline.

The Alpha's grip gradually slackened with each passing heartbeat as our gazes remained intensely intertwined. My palms were ablaze from his heat as I stubbornly refused to release my hold on him. An extended moment passed in what felt like a battle of wills between man and wolf. The intensity of the Alpha's gaze scorching into mine felt like an eternity compressed into mere seconds.

The raw potency of his power washed over me in suffocating waves, rendering me dazed and breathless. Battling the instinctual urge to release him was akin to fighting against a current. A silent scream urging me to flee grew deafeningly louder with each passing second.

Run, Lila, Run...

The hair at the nape of my neck bristled as I sensed a shift in the atmosphere around us. The air grew thick with tension, a silent witness to the dangerous dance we were locked in.

Suddenly, the Alpha's arms encircled me, lifting my petite form as if I weighed nothing more than a feather. A gasp of surprise lodged in my throat, soundless and futile. His lack of reaction confirmed that my voice had failed me once again. The chilling memories of Zander flooded my mind, casting a shadow over this moment. Fear gripped me with its icy fingers, coiling around me in a hold that I could not shake. I refused to be another man's prey. My fists pounded against the Alpha's broad chest in a desperate demand for freedom. The metallic scent of blood clung to my skin like an unwanted cloak while his musky aroma swirled around us, tainted with fury that stoked the flames of my terror.
