The sunlight poured through the stained glass high above. It was a masterpiece of shades of gold, reds, greens, and purples that pieced together to make a decorative design of flora life. The colors danced along the walls and floor, shifting with the time and sun. This was the space Nadia had cut out for herself. A place where she went to work on her potions and dry her herbs, where she preferred to be the witch and not the wolf. Before she came, this room was used for storage and gathered dust. It was the highest point in the castle, and not many people wanted to take the long, winding walk up the stairs. But Nadia enjoyed the space, enjoyed the quiet solitude it offered. A space where she would not be bothered by the eyes of judgment.

I found myself sinking into the familiar surroundings, with Nadia sitting across from me, her dark eyes reflecting the same concern that gnawed at my gut.

"The information we've gathered from the youngling, Liam, is alarming," I said. "If these creatures have truly returned after centuries of extinction, we must learn all we can to protect our pack and warn the others."

Nadia's nod was slow and thoughtful. "What I have here for records are sparse when it comes to vampires. The coven's archives could offer us more insight. Even consulting with the elders might shed some light on the situation. It's not something I wish to do, but I think it is time we take that step. Things only seem to worsen and time is something we may not have much of."

I leaned forward, resting my forearms on the old oak table, immersing myself in the scent that filled the room. The aged parchment, whispering tales of old, of stories of past kings and fables. The leather-bound grimoires exuding a robust aroma, directions, and lists of ingredients to make potions and cast spells written in cryptic language and symbols. The witches' writing that Nadia was taught by the elders to help guide her lay in those leather-bound books. An assortment of herbs simmering in bubbling concoctions ensnared within delicate glass vials.

"Seeking their wisdom is wise, Nadia. I know doing so will be hard for you, and I thank you for it." I said, knowing all too well what would await her at the coven. "The journey could prove to be dangerous with Zander still loose and a strange being aiding him. If that person, that thing is a vampire, the danger will be even greater."

Caleb interjected from his post by the door, his features scrunching up in obvious distaste at the olfactory assault provided by Nadia's brewing potions. "I'll go," he declared firmly. "I can go with Nadia, keep her safe, and assist in communication between our pack and the coven. If we stumble upon any fresh leads or encounter this vampire or Zander, you'll be mind-linked immediately."

I nodded my approval, noting the determination etched into the lines of his face and the slightest hint of concern that shifted in his eyes. Caleb had proven himself time and time again that he was more than capable of keeping Nadia safe. Despite his gentle disposition and the compassion he often exhibited, he was every bit as formidable as Elijah.

"Very well," I said. "But take no unnecessary risks. It's there and back, got it? I cannot afford to lose either of you. The burden of worry is already heavy with Lila's state. I cannot bear the thought of adding your names to that list. Take a handful of soldiers as well. While the coven's territory is off-limits to outsiders, they can lend support on your journey and stand guard at its borders."

Caleb and Nadia nodded in agreement. Nadia stood from her seat and bustled around her workspace, her hands deftly combining an assortment of herbs while she scribbled on a piece of parchment.

Once she'd finished her swift notations, she handed me the blended herbs and parchment. "These are the last reserves of Lila's medicinal herbs," she explained, her voice thick with concern. "And this contains their names. The local apothecaries should recognize them and assist in replenishing our stock. If all goes well, we should return within a month."
