Chapter VIII

Time was a cruel, cruel thing. It would never wait for anyone and continue no matter what the situation. But now, even time was frozen. Frozen. Just like me. I was frozen and paralysed. My mind was numb and my heart had stopped beating. Everything was frozen. Everything. I felt something on my hand, and it was so soft and gentle. Soft and gentle. I pulled back and time moved fast. Faster than ever. My mind was a maze with an almost impossible puzzle. My heart was a fire with the merriest of embers. I was being burned by my own body. Burned alive. He was not looking at me. He was not looking at me. But I was looking straight at him, and I wanted to say a million things, but the only thing that came out was, "What..?"

"Do you want to come with me to my home and stay there for awhile?" he breathed, and I saw his lungs expand and compress. Expand and compress. "As you know, this place isn't safe. Isn't safe at all."

"What are you talking about?" I demanded, all the colour draining from my face.

"The disaster yesterday, of course!" he answered, running his hands through his hair. "The ones about the guards failing to keep their duty and endangering the entire city. Why do you think it was so quiet?!" he countered back, but more gently than me.

Oh, confusion was water and I was forcefully drinking all of it. I was so confused. My mind was buzzing and my heart was thumping. Confused, confused and more confused.

"You don't know what happen?" he quietly exclaimed. He looked at me in disbelief.

I shook my head. I had no clue.

He seemed surprised, but he didn't waste a second to talk. "Yesterday, many guards were assaulted by some unknown rebels. They were dragged away to an unknown place and left the citizens unsafe. More rebels were able to enter because of that, and many people had been put into the Holmes due to that. They were scared and the Holmes was, to them, the only safe place in Heutat. Many people got kidnapped or robbed or injured, and there have been many cases of..death." he whispered.

"This place is not safe. Everyone is either in the hospital or at the Holmes. It is too risky for anyone right now. Some people have even been killed in the Holmes and the hospitals. And since you are my..friend, I think you should come with me." his eyes wandered to my face as he sighed. "I would... like it a lot if you came with me. Because..I don't want you to get injured, especially when I can save you." his words were quiet but strong as stone.

He cared about my safety and my health. He cared about me. About a pathetic girl like me. I didn't deserve it. Part of me was telling me refuse. How could I do something absolutely so rude? Just tag along with him? I couldn't. But most of me was filled with excitement. I would get to finally escape. Finally be free. Finally not be under the rules of father. Finally feel the sun on my skin. Finally..finally. I was so happy, yet worried and confused. I didn't want to burden Landon, he seemed too nice. But I also wanted to go. So badly. So, so badly.

"Eiffel..?" he whispered, uncertainty in his voice.

I promised myself, before I die I wanted to escape. Just for a few seconds

And

This

Was

It.

"Yes." I say. One simple word that slips out of my lips so easily. One word that made Landon sigh. A sigh of relief. A sigh of happiness.

"Thank you..You won't regret it." he look at me and it made my heart beat fast, so fast. I took a big risk, and I was already starting to enjoy it. Few seconds of happy silence passed. I was so excited. So, so excited. I was going to be free. Be happy. Be an individual. My heart beat was faster than the wind. My mind was more full than the Holmes. And I was so excited.

"We will be leaving in about an hours time." he said, looking towards my cupboard.

I nod my head, looking at my cupboard. I suddenly felt so self-conscious, like I had to be my best in front of him. My most dazzling. He nodded his head slightly. His eyes seemed more lively and cheerful than I have seen them. I was so interested in meeting his family and know him a little more. I wanted to see them. See them all.

"Well, I will be back in exactly one hour then. Make sure that you are ready by then.." he says, before walking to my balcony window.

"Wait!" I exclaim, rushing and grabbing his arm. He froze, his head fixed into position. I immediately let go of his arm, feeling embarrased.

"How are you going to leave using the window?" I asked, looking at my balcony. It was quite hard to get around the junk around it. A small grin cracked his lips, as he mouthed the word 'watch' to me before disappearing into the junk. After a few moments, I hear my doorbell ring. I ran up to it, just to see his face. He smirks at me, as I made a clearly impressed face. And I was. How did he even do that? He didn't say anything and left me, with one hour until my life begins.
