Claire
I stood there, breathless, my lips still tingling from the kiss that had stolen every coherent thought from my mind. My heart was racing, and my body felt like it was on fire. I could still feel the man's presence, even though he had stepped away, his smirk lingering in the air between us like a challenge. The kiss had been unexpected, and explosive, and it had shaken me to my core.
But then I felt it. The weight of Daniel's gaze from across the room burned into me like fire.
My heart sank, and I tore my eyes away from the man standing before me to meet Daniel's stare. His arm was still draped around Irene's waist, but his expression had changed entirely. The laughter that had danced across his face moments before had vanished, replaced by a look of shock and fury. His blue eyes, which I had once known so well, now blazed with something darker, something possessive and angry.
A small, vindictive part of me was pleased. I had wanted to make him jealous, to remind him that I was still here, that I could still get under his skin. But the guilt hit me just as hard as the satisfaction. The man beside me, the one who had kissed me, wasn't Daniel. He wasn't the man I'd loved for years. And yet, in that moment, I couldn't deny the pull I felt toward him. I couldn't deny the way he made me feel.
I looked up at the stranger again, trying to catch my breath, the heat from his kiss still swirling inside me. His smirk hadn't faltered. If anything, it had deepened as he noticed the effect his kiss had had on me and the impact it had had on Daniel.
"You see him now, don't you?" the man said, his voice low, almost teasing. He didn't even need to look at Daniel to know what was happening. He could feel the tension in the air just as much as I could. "That rage. That possessiveness. It's the mark of a man who's losing control."
I swallowed, my throat dry, unsure of what to say. He stepped closer again, his body brushing against mine as he leaned down, his lips grazing my ear in a way that made my breath hitch.
"He doesn't like seeing another man with his toy," the stranger whispered, his voice dripping with amusement. "But that's exactly what you wanted, isn't it? To make him jealous. To remind him that you're not his to control anymore."
I flinched at his words, but there was truth in them. I had come here to get Daniel's attention, to shake him out of whatever spell Irene had cast over him. But the way the man spoke the way he called me a made my stomach twist.
