The evening sun dipped low in the sky, casting a warm golden hue across Bible's small apartment. He had just finished tidying up when he heard a knock at the door. His heart skipped a beat, a mixture of anticipation and dread flooding through him as he opened it to find Jet standing there. The easy smile on Jet's face faded quickly when he noticed Bible's strained expression.
"Hey," Jet said, stepping inside without waiting for an invitation. His casual demeanor did little to mask the tension that had been brewing between them for weeks. "I hope I'm not interrupting."
"No, not at all," Bible replied, forcing a casual tone. He gestured toward the small living room, where a few of his cats lounged lazily. "Just... hanging out with the cats."
Jet chuckled, his eyes scanning the room. "It's cozy." He paused, his expression shifting as if bracing himself for something heavier. "Actually, I wanted to talk to you about something."
Bible's stomach twisted. He kept his voice light, offering a half-hearted smile. "Sure, what's up?"
Jet took a deep breath, looking more serious now. "I got a job offer to lead a guided tour on Koh Samui for a few clients. It's just for a few days, but I'll be gone for about four days."
Bible felt his heart drop. Four days away from Jet felt like an eternity, especially with everything between them unresolved. "Oh," he said, fighting to sound unfazed. "That's great. You should go."
Jet's eyes softened with concern. "You sure you're okay with that? I didn't want to leave without telling you."
"Yeah, of course," Bible replied, shrugging as if it didn't matter. "It's your job. You gotta make a living, right?"
"Right," Jet said, though the confidence in his voice wavered. He took a step closer, searching Bible's face for some hidden truth. "I just thought you might want to know."
"Thanks for telling me," Bible said, forcing a smile that felt tight and unnatural. "It's fine. I'll be busy with the café anyway."
The air between them grew thick with unspoken words. Jet seemed like he wanted to say more but held back, glancing around the room as if searching for something to break the silence.
"Are you excited for the tour?" Bible asked, trying to change the subject. "Koh Samui is beautiful. You'll have a great time."
"Yeah, I am," Jet replied, his tone lighter but not completely comfortable. "I just wish I didn't have to leave so soon. It feels like we haven't really talked in weeks."
Bible nodded, a tightness forming in his chest. "Yeah, I know. But it's only four days. You'll be back before you know it."
Jet's gaze lingered on him, emotions flickering in his eyes that he seemed hesitant to fully express. "I just... I don't want things to be weird between us. I don't want to push you."
"You're not," Bible said, the words spilling out quickly, almost reflexively. "I just need a little time. It's complicated."
Jet's expression softened, though disappointment still hovered in his eyes. "I get that. Just... whenever you're ready, I'm here."
"Thanks," Bible replied, his heart swelling with warmth despite the tension between them. "That means a lot."
Jet stepped back, and Bible felt a strange mix of relief and sadness. "I should go pack for the trip," Jet said, his voice tinged with reluctance.
"Yeah, of course," Bible said, hating the thought of Jet leaving. "Safe travels. Hope the tour goes well."
"Thanks. I'll bring something back for you," Jet promised, offering a small, hesitant smile.
"You don't have to," Bible said, trying to sound nonchalant, but the crack in his voice betrayed him.
Jet lingered for a moment longer, his eyes tracing Bible's face. "Take care of yourself, okay?"
"I will," Bible replied, but the words felt empty.
As Jet turned to leave, a hollow feeling settled in the room. Bible closed the door behind him, leaning against it as the weight of everything washed over him. Four days felt like a lifetime, and the growing distance between them felt insurmountable.
He sank onto the couch, the silence of the room engulfing him. His cats circled around him, their soft purring offering little comfort. Bible's mind wandered to the unspoken feelings he tried so hard to bury, the fear of losing Jet, of never figuring out what they meant to each other.
In the fading light of the apartment, Bible realized that no matter how much he tried to act indifferent, his heart was tethered to Jet in ways he couldn't easily explain. The connection between them was real, and it was becoming harder to deny with every passing moment.
And now, with Jet gone for a few days, the ache in Bible's chest only grew stronger, the longing for something he wasn't sure he was ready to embrace tightening its grip.
