Meant to Happen (NeedleDrop)

Teardrop'd never had many ambitions.

Sure, she'd always wanted to talk, but she didn't dream about it. She knew it'll never happen, so she didn't waste her time deluding herself with the possibility. It was depressing, she knew, but it was something she stood by.

So, she much preferred to live her life fast. She didn't like worrying, and lived through every day the same. It was a simple life, but one she enjoyed.

Well...there was one thing that she wanted.

Nervous, she gave a quick, shaking wave to the Head Knight, Needle. To her relief, she simply nodded back. She ignored the light, yet noticeable blush coming to her face, and speed-walked away.

She walked out to the library, where a girl she recognized was sitting down at the librarian's desk. "Oh, good afternoon, TD!" Book smiled at her, standing up and waving. She waved back. Book was a common volunteer at the library. Her family was very poor, and she did what she could to help them. Her and Teardrop had grown quite close over the years of her coming in.

She pulled out her notebook and neatly wrote down a message. She slid the paper to Book, who nodded after a moment. "I see what you mean." She replied, handing her the paper back, "But, personally, I'd say to not doubt yourself. Who cares if it's frowned upon? If people don't approve, it's a shame, but you shouldn't let them tell you how to feel. And, even if the whole world's against you, I'm on your side."

Teardrop tapped on the table she was sitting at, thinking about what she said. Finally, she nodded, and smiled. 'Thanks, Book.' She wrote.

Book chuckled, "Don't worry about it."

A few days passed. Teardrop was just walking through town, as per usual. What was unusual about it?

She was completely lost.

There were crowds of people throughout the whole street, courtesy of an upcoming event. They made it hard to walk, let alone see. So, she'd taken a wrong turn, and now she had no idea where she was going. "I left my paper at home, too..." She sighed inaudibly, and was forced to resort to gesturing. 'Could anyone show me to the market?' She signed. No answer. She tried again. Again, nothing. Eventually, she simply waved her arms high in the air to try and get someone's attention. And she did. Just not the attention of someone she expected.

Needle.

Her nerves instantly went haywire, both with affection and fear. However, they both faded quickly into shock when she saw the knight sign back. 'Make a right, and keep going forward until you see the sign.' Needle simply gestured.

'You can sign!?'

'I had a friend whose mother couldn't hear well.'

Her shock disappeared, and Teardrop was only left feeling curious. She knew she shouldn't have been sticking her neck out, but she couldn't help it. 'Who was it?'

The knight simply shrugged, 'It doesn't matter.'

'...Right. Well, thank you!' She bowed slightly, before skipping away, not even attempting to hide her wide, excited smile.

Needle waited till she was gone to finally smile as well.

A few days flew by, and Teardrop was back to her usually routine. She was in her typical, empty corner of the library, when she heard a tap on the table. She glanced up from her book, and felt like her heart could stop when she saw Needle standing there. Instead of the usual silver armor, she had a plain beige dress and brown leather vest on, just like Teardrop and most of the other women in the kingdom. Her long silver hair was for once let down. But, the most unusual thing was that instead of the tough, solid expression she always wore, all she had on her face was a simple, small smile.

'Is this seat taken?' She signed, pointing to the seat next to Teardrop. She instantly shook her head and motioned for her to sit, which she did.

'What are you doing here, miss?' She nonverbally asked.

'I come here all the time when I am off duty.'

'Really?'

'Yes. Most people can't tell, but I really like to read.'

'That's amazing!...Oh, also, I'm not deaf. Just mute.'

"Oh!" Needle chuckled, embarrassed, "Apologies."

'No worries.'

"So, Teardrop, was it? The librarian told me you were pretty regular at the library." She extended her hand for a handshake, which Teardrop happily returned.

'Yes, that's me!' She grinned. 'And yes, I do come here a lot. My father is a bookmaker, actually.'

"Oh, that's interesting! I heard he's pretty well known."

'That he is.'

The two continued conversing for a while, before Needle eventually stood up. "I'm sorry, I have to go. My duties are about to start."

Teardrop nodded understandingly. 'That's alright. Will I see you again?'

If anyone else had asked, Needle would have instantly answered negatively. However, in a situation like this?

All she could find herself doing was smiling.

"I'll make time." She assured. Teardrop grinned, getting a small chuckle out of her. As she watched the knight leave the library, she suddenly realized something. She didn't need to be right by her side to talk to Needle. All she needed to do was wait for her.

Because in a simple world like hers, if it was meant to happen, it would always happen anyway.
