The rain poured down outside as the boring Monday evening seemed to drag on. The library was practically a ghost town leaving Harmony to her own devices as she waited for her shift to end.She had only been working in the library for a few months as a part time assistant, but she loved it. She was currently in the last year of her masters program and the night job was working out great. It also didn't hurt that she enjoyed reading and often tossed around the idea of owning a bookstore one day.
As she glanced over at the clock sitting behind the circulation desk she let out a long sigh. Two more hours of silence felt like forever.
Like any other time she was bored on the job, Harmony pulled out her phone and started scrolling through TikTok. There were a few funny videos, but her for you page seemed to be overtaken by edits of Billie. Yes, the Billie who she had know most of her life and slept with five years ago. The younger girl, who started going by Billie Eilish, had went off to study fashion in California and somehow managed to make a name for herself.
Harmony discovered it randomly one day when she was scrolling through Instagram and saw a collaboration with Billie and some big brand. Apparently her style had gotten her a lot of attention and followers online and being in LA just increased the opportunities.
It honestly felt like she was in the twilight zone the first time Harmony realized that Billie was basically famous. It wasn't that she didn't expect it, Billie was practically made to be a celebrity, but more so that it felt random.
She and Billie had only spoken a few times after that night they shared. Harmony knew Billie was looking for something more, but she just couldn't do it. Even entertaining the idea of being friends put her off, because she knew how easily they could cross the line again. So against her better judgment she ghosted the younger and they haven't talked since.
At first she fully expected Billie to try to reach out, maybe even blow her phone up a little. That never happened. Billie gave it two unanswered texts and calls then seemingly moved on. And Harmony knew it was a bitch move, but she was scarred. Even if she wanted to see where things went with Billie her brain wouldn't allow her. She had been hurt too many times behind sex, or the lack there of, and she wasn't trying to experience that again.
Something inside her felt broken and she felt like she wouldn't have made that great of a friend or girlfriend to Billie anyway. She needed to just let the younger girl go.
Harmony's thumb hovered over the screen preparing to scroll again when the large metal doors opened and closed at the entrance. The girl paused the video and stood to her feet prepared to help some poor soul find their required reading for class.
However, the person who strolled in soaked from the rain was not who she was expecting to see on a Monday night.
Billie pulled her hood off as she walked over to the front desk with her backpack on her shoulder. She was dressed casually in an oversized hoodie and baggy denim pants. She had a green bandana covering her dark hair and a pair of silver frames on her face.
