He learned to walk while I was away

And he was talking 'fore I knew it,

and as he grew

He'd say "I'm gonna be like you, dad"

Jo was never any good at relationships.

At home, she didn't exactly have much of good example of a healthy romantic relationship — what with her mom being dead and all. In fact, her little friends-with-benefits situation with Riley was probably the longest and most functional one she'd ever had. Yeah... that should say it all.

Even though the last couple of years have been rough for Jo, it's not like this is a new occurrence for her. Take her first crush for example. All the way back when she was just nine years old, just after her mom had died.

His name was Scotty Fisher and he wasn't exactly the most popular boy around. To put it bluntly, he was a total nerd. And Jo was totally in love with him. Or at least as close to that as you can get at nine years old.

One day, she and Harper were on the seesaw during recess when they noticed a commotion by the jungle gym. Some of the other boys had been picking on Scotty; they'd ripped up the drawings he'd done during art class and pushed him to the ground. Jo had marched up to them with fury blazing in her eyes and shoved them straight off of the poor boy.

"Leave him alone!" She'd shouted, "Or you'll have me to deal with!"

Even at just nine, Jo had a reputation for being a bit of a hothead so the boys had all scattered, running away in fear. Much to her surprise, Scotty didn't appreciate her intervention very much.

"Don't worry about those guys," Jo had tried to reassure him as she picked up the pieces of his art assignment, "They're just jealous because you're so much smarter than them. Girls like smart guys."

"What girls?" He had grumbled, pushing himself out of the dirt.

"Lots of girls," Jo shrugged shyly, a deep blush painting her entire face, "I mean... I like you."

That was probably the most honest she'd ever been about her own feelings in her entire life. And Scotty Fisher just had to go and wreck it.

"Well, I don't like you," he'd snapped, "Cause now everyone thinks I need a little girl to stand up for me. You're such a stupid-head!"
