London, 6:30 PM.
Naomi sank into the couch, the soft cushions enveloping her as she let out a content sigh. The aroma of garlic and herbs wafted in from the kitchen, and her stomach rumbled in anticipation. She glanced at Harry, who was busy setting the table, a determined look on his face as he arranged the plates and cutlery with exaggerated care.
"Are we really doing this? A fancy dinner at home?" Naomi asked, a hint of teasing in her voice.
Harry turned to her, a proud grin breaking through. "Why not? You deserve it, especially after the day you've had. Plus, I'm a culinary genius now." He gestured dramatically as if he were presenting a gourmet meal.
"Culinary genius or just this close to burning the building down?" she shot back, grinning.
"Hey, I'll have you know that last week's pasta was a masterpiece," he protested, waving his hand dismissively.
"Masterpiece or disaster? There's a fine line."
They both chuckled, and for a moment, the weight of the impending arrival of their baby faded away, replaced by playful banter.
After a few more minutes of teasing, Harry finally brought over the pasta he'd prepared, complete with a side salad and garlic bread. They sat down at the table, a simple but delightful spread before them.
"Okay, so what's next on the pre-baby to-do list?" Harry asked as he twirled his fork into the pasta, looking at Naomi with an expectant gaze.
Naomi thought for a moment, chewing thoughtfully. "We still need to finalize the nursery, pick up a few last-minute essentials, and—oh! We have to install the car seat."
Harry raised an eyebrow. "You know that thing is basically a puzzle, right? I think we should just let the professionals handle it."
"Not a chance," she replied, shaking her head. "If we don't figure it out ourselves, we'll never learn. Besides, I have full faith in your car-seat-installation skills."
"Wow, you really do have high standards for me," he laughed, pretending to be offended.
"Just trying to prepare you for parenthood," she said, smiling. "What else?"
Harry thought for a moment, then nodded. "We should probably stock up on some snacks for the late-night feedings. I'm not gonna lie, I'm really looking forward to those midnight runs to the fridge."
"Snacks, huh? We'll end up with a mountain of junk food if you're in charge," Naomi teased.
"Hey, I'm all for balance! Baby needs protein, too!" he shot back, and they both burst into laughter.
As they finished their meal, the conversation flowed easily, discussing everything from diaper brands to baby-proofing the house. The anticipation built around them, but with each shared laugh and playful debate, they felt a little more ready.
Later, as they settled onto the couch with some dessert—a rich chocolate cake Harry had insisted on making—Naomi curled up against Harry, feeling the warmth radiate between them.
"Can you believe it's only a few weeks away?" she murmured, her hand resting on her belly.
Harry nodded, his expression turning serious. "It feels like just yesterday we were finding out you were pregnant."
"Now look at us," she said, grinning. "Planning late-night snack runs and installing car seats."
Suddenly, a strong kick from the baby made Naomi jump, her eyes widening. "Whoa, did you feel that?" she exclaimed, her voice a mixture of surprise and excitement.
Harry's eyes lit up. "Feel what?" He leaned in closer, placing his hand on her belly. "Come on, little one, show me."
Another kick landed against his palm, and Harry's face broke into a wide smile. "Whoa! She's strong!"
Naomi laughed, a wave of warmth washing over her. "Right? I'm telling you, she's going to be a little fighter and take after her uncle JJ."
Harry looked at her, eyes shining with joy. "I can't believe this is happening. You're amazing, you know that?"
"Just wait until I'm actually a mom," she said, rolling her eyes playfully. "You might rethink that."
"Never," he replied softly, brushing a strand of hair from her face. "We're in this together."
As they settled in for the night, feeling the baby kick and sharing dreams of parenthood, Naomi knew they were exactly where they needed to be—together, ready to embrace whatever came next.
