The tires screeched, signaling their arrival. Veeransh glanced at Samaira as he pulled out a wooden box covered with red muslin, which gleamed in the dim light. Samaira’s eyes shifted from the box to Veeransh’s face, her expression a mixture of curiosity and confusion.
Veeransh’s demeanor had shifted drastically. Just moments ago, he had been teasing her, but now his face was serious, his entire being as solid as stone. His emerald green eyes, usually playful, were now devoid of any emotion.
The only time Samaira had ever seen him reveal his feelings was during her panic attack. His eyes had held a strange, pained look, as if he feared losing someone close. In that brief moment, she had glimpsed a raw vulnerability that most people couldn’t even imagine.
He never showed his emotions around her—never. She had only seen him express himself through anger, the worst being when she found him on the balcony, his hands bloody. The sight had terrified her; her heart had skipped a beat. She realized then just how afraid she was of losing him. Despite her past, which had shattered her trust in men, Veeransh had somehow managed to make her feel safe. If something happened to him now, she wasn’t sure she could bear it.
Some people struggle to show their emotions, but that doesn’t make them unkind. Maybe they’re just afraid of attachment, afraid to get close again. You never really know what someone is battling inside.
Just because someone doesn’t speak up about their pain doesn’t mean they aren’t suffering. Samaira knew that Veeransh’s smiles were often forced, meant to comfort her rather than express his own happiness. She could see right through them.
She had never wanted to trust a man again, but Veeransh had shown her that not all men were the same. He’d proved that while some could be hurtful, others genuinely cared. If women have trust issues, then men do too. Some men give everything, only to be betrayed. We all carry our own trust issues.
Veeransh had given her time, respect, and, most importantly, self-worth. She had always feared any partner she might have would be like her father—controlling and disrespectful. But Veeransh was different. To girls, it wasn’t about material things; even a single flower, given with love, meant more than an expensive bouquet.
Being loved is the bare minimum. Veeransh valued her, respected her, prioritized her. He had done everything to make her fall in love with him, and he had succeeded.
“Listen, Butterfly,” Veeransh said softly, drawing her attention as he opened the box with his gloved hands. Samaira’s gaze fixed on it, her eyes wide with curiosity. Inside were two black masks, designed in an elegant eagle pattern. The masks were beautiful, with intricate details that captivated her, though she was puzzled. Wasn’t this supposed to be a business event? Why were there masks?
