The streets were silent while Niharika drove back home. It was like the night stretched endlessly in time. Her mind was all at the emotional whirlwind surrounding Abhimanyu. She repeated each short talk that passed between them and wished that she was courageous enough to tell him her feelings.

Niharika (thought): * If only I had the guts to tell him.

Her phone buzzed with a message from Inaya. "Did you reach home safely?" Niharika smiled at her friend's concern and replied that she was on her way. She turned up the radio, hoping the music would keep her too busy mulling over to stay glued to her thoughts.

Niharika had gone through such an emotional day that while driving home, she could not even focus. It was a new moon night setting, and it used to cast a darker vibe over the city, but today she hardly noticed it. Still, her mind kept reliving the conversation she had with Alessandra at the party.

Niharika did not notice the truck speeding towards her when it was too late to do anything.

The truck's horn blared, a deafening sound that jolted her back to reality. Her eyes widened in horror as she realised the imminent danger. She tried to swerve, but there was no time. The impact was brutal—a violent collision that sent her car spinning. Metal crunched and twisted, glass shattered into a thousand pieces, and the air was filled with the acrid smell of burning rubber.

Niharika felt searing pain all around her body, but the cold started to numb everything within mere moments. Her head thudded against the steering wheel and filled with blood that she could taste in her mouth. Everything turned greyish, and then her vision became cloudy, while the entire world around her started disappearing into a dark, suffocating blackness. She held desperately on to consciousness, but the darkness did not stop; it continued to drag her down.

As she sank into unconsciousness, Abhimanyu was the last things in her mind, wondering whether she would ever see him again. The bright colours of her life were replaced with an all-encompassing blackness, and the sounds of the city receded into an eerie silence. Niharika's world had been turned upside down in an instant, with her fate uncertain and future hanging in the balance.

Niharika clenched her fingers around the steering wheel. Her knuckles whitened as she thought of what Alessandra had said.

"She can't be serious. What does 'we need to talk' mean?"

She was suddenly interrupted by the screeching horn of a truck. She looked up, and her eyes opened wide with terror. "No, no, no!" she screamed, trying to swerve out of its way. But it was too late. The truck hit her car, causing it to spin out of control in all directions.

The crunching of metal and the cracking of glass were all happening in her ears. Her mind thought this could not be happening. Her chest would rise in a panic from the thought itself. Suddenly, she received a sharp stroke on her head, which made her hit it against the steering wheel, and her mouth was filled with the coppery taste of blood.

"Niharika, stay awake, babie. You have to." she said, but the vision ahead of her was already getting blurry.

As the darkness engulfed everything, she thought of Abhimanyu. Will I ever see him again? she asked herself as fear and sadness blended together. The world around her turned dark, and all she heard was the beat of her heart, getting fainter with every second that ticked by.
