Daisy turned out the bathroom light and stepped into the bedroom. She found Jason sitting on the side of the bed, untying his shoe. Taking a deep breath, she joined him on the bed.
"I'm sorry," she said, staring at the carpet. "I overreacted. It's just I don't like confrontations of any kind, and the thought of you confronting Jared left me with a sick feeling in my stomach. If anything happened to you, I don't know what I would do."
Jason shifted toward her and cupped the nape of her neck. He leaned in close, brushing his lips against hers. "Thank you for apologizing," he whispered, "but you were right and I was wrong."
"I was?" Daisy murmured.
"You said confronting Jared would make things worse for Kimber," Jason said. "And that she doesn't need any more drama in her life. You were right. She's a mess right now."
"Her body is experiencing a lot of changes," Daisy said. "I know what she's going through."
Jason frowned. "What do you mean you know what she's going through?"
Daisy pressed her forehead to his and closed her eyes. "What I am about to tell you I've never told anyone. It's a secret I had planned to take to my grave." She pecked him on the lips. "But you are my husband and I should be able to share things with you."
"Your secret will be safe with me," Jason promised.
"My sophomore year of college I got pregnant," Daisy confessed. "I was on the pill. I was being careful, but I got sick and had to take antibiotics. No one told me antibiotics and birth control don't mix."
Jason slipped an arm around her and asked, "Weren't you dating Cody Ellis at the time?"
"Yes," Daisy replied. "Surprisingly, he took the news that I was pregnant well. He told me whatever I decided to do, he would be there to support me."
"You miscarried, didn't you?" Jason uttered quietly.
Daisy nodded. "It happened a week before Christmas."
"Oh, sweetheart." Jason squeezed her gently. "That's why you didn't come home for Christmas break. It wasn't the same without you. I wish I had known what happened. I would have been there for you. Was Cody there for you?"
"At first, yes," Daisy responded. "Then he became distant and eventually he just stopped coming around. I didn't blame him. We were both too young for anything serious."
"If you hadn't lost the baby, would you have kept it?" Jason wanted to know.
Daisy sighed. "I've asked myself that question many times. The truth is, I don't know what I would have done."
"I think you would have kept the baby," Jason said. "You would have loved him or her with your whole heart."
"Maybe you're right," Daisy said.
"I know I'm right." Jason kissed her. "Thank you for sharing your secret with me. Like I said, it will be safe with me."
"I trust you, husband of mine," Daisy said.
Jason smiled crookedly. "I like it when you call me that."
"Yeah?" Daisy looped her arms around his neck. "How much do you like it?"
"Let me show you, wife of mine." Jason covered her lips with his.
"Thanks for coming," Jason said, letting Ridge into his mother-in-law's house, the following morning. "I don't think I need to tell you how much is riding on this meeting."
