Going back to being friends was easier in some ways than Juliana and Nate thought it would be. Some aspects of their friendship came so naturally since they had been so close for longer than they could even remember.
They went back to being together almost constantly, spending their time hanging out at her house, going for walks, watching movies, talking, laughing, having sleepovers; all of the things they did before.
In other ways, though, it was nearly impossible. Every time Juliana laughed, or waved at him after class in the school hallway, or sang along as loud as she could to her playlist in his truck, Nate wanted to grab her and tell her that there was no way this would work, because how could he be just friends with her after knowing it was like to have her?
But he knew that he couldn't do that. When he caused their relationship to end and they had no contact with each other, it was the worst time of his life. He knew that he fucked up, and he was going to have to live with being just friends with her again, at least for now.
He planned to prove to her that he was worthy of being with her again over time, and wouldn't make the same mistakes as before. He knew it wasn't going to happen overnight, but he was willing to wait.
Juliana was slightly better at the whole thing, even if it wasn't by much. She had been so lost without him that she was incredibly happy to have him back, even if it was just as friends.
The hardest part for her was when they were cuddled up in bed at night, going to sleep. Every time, it took everything in her to not blurt out that she loved him and wanted to be with him again, despite the terrible things he did when they were in a relationship.
However, she knew that they couldn't work together as a couple. He was too controlling, too jealous, that he couldn't contain himself. He was always that way with her before they got together, but once they were a couple it got completely out of hand.
It was just the way he was, and to have him as her best friend was better than not having him at all.
"I don't believe it." Maddy took a sip from her bottle of water before looking around at the other girls at the table. "There's no way they're not fucking, right?"
It was Friday afternoon and Juliana, Maddy, Cassie, Kat and BB were all sitting in the cafeteria for lunch. Juliana had just filled them all in on where she stood with Nate and how it was going.
Kat laid her phone down and focused her eyes on Juliana, like she was trying to tell if she was lying or not. "It is kind of hard to believe."
"Y'all are definitely still fuckin'." BB agreed.
"I can see you guys working as friends again." Cassie, ever the hopeful one, said.
"Thank you, Cass. I don't know why the rest of you don't believe me."
