Chapter 10: The Night That Burned Brightly

Her grip tightened on the handle of the fire axe she had obtained. The sensation on her hand caused a surge of thrill to burst from her heart. Before she realized it, the searing pain on her wound that constantly bothered her had faded. Her limbs that previously refused to work began to burst with energy. She could feel her entire body begging her to go wild with the weapon in her hand.

"Let's go!"

With a terror-inducing smile on her face, she pulled her arms back and twisted her body. She spun her body once while putting her entire weight into the axe before releasing her grip. Carrying the momentum, the axe whirled into the air, flying right toward the helicopter.

"N-No way!" Iroha screamed in surprise.

Iroha tried to maneuver her helicopter out of the way, but it was too late. The axe smashed right into the helicopter, embedded deeply into the cockpit. Without any way to control it, the helicopter began spinning out. It continued to desperately fly before crashing right behind a warehouse into a ball of fire. The bothersome spotlight and wind had finally disappeared. A glint of madness flashed in Suisei's eyes as she watched it with a wide grin.

"Ha... Hahaha!" A hoarse laughter escaped from Suisei's mouth. The remaining thrill inside her body allowed her to move her body, despite her lack of energy. Her legs moved unsteadily, but as long as it still worked, Suisei didn't mind it. She felt like there was something left for her to do, but her mind felt foggy. Trying to recall what she needed to do felt like traversing a thick layer of mist. Was there something that she hadn't done?

Her body aimlessly carried itself next to the first police car that she wrecked. The only thing she had left was the armed C4 in her hand along with its detonator. But who was she supposed to use it on again?

At that moment, a chill suddenly emanated from behind her. Something moved in the corner of her eyes. Her body reacted before her mind realized what had happened. She dove right into the wrecked police car's backseat and tried to crawl through.

Bang!

"Argh!"

However, a gunshot rang and the bullet managed to hit her in her left leg. Suisei exclaimed in pain as her body flopped out of the wreckage. The bullet caused a stinging pain to surge through her body. That pain acted like a load that finally broke the dam. With it came a wave of pain that she had been carelessly ignoring. From her legs, her head, her arms, to the gunshot wound on her body. Every single part of her body was ripping in pain with every minute movement. She tried her best to crawl away, only to find herself at the end of the docks. The waves coldly battered against the harbor, providing her no way to go further.

"Seriously, you were a pain in the ass until the very end. We're already busy dealing with the gangsters as it is, and you came along making trouble out of thin air."

A cold voice reverberated behind Suisei, followed by footsteps. Suisei turned her head with great effort and saw the culprit behind the gunshot. In front of her stood the chief officer, pointing a pistol against her. The fires from the mess she had created bathed Subaru in an orange glow. The sight caused a powerless chuckle to escape Suisei's mouth.

Subaru's gaze landed on the criminal in front of her. The unyielding confidence in Suisei's eyes flickered weakly, like a candle that's about to go out. In its place, a shadow of death slowly creeped in. There was no doubt about it—Suisei would die here, whether she pulled the trigger or not.

However, Subaru couldn't let her guard down. The moment she did, there was no doubt that Suisei would do anything to bring Subaru down with her. The girl with a bullet lodged inside her had somehow taken out three of her officers. Even though she had seen it with her own eyes, she still found it hard to believe. The sheer will and madness that emanated from her, alongside her ruthlessness to push through her injuries, caused cold sweat to pour down Subaru's back to this moment.
