CHAPTER 14

Gideon

There wasn't much I felt when I returned to Highvale after so many years. The town looked the same, and the people, too. But there was something different. I bought a girl along with me. Something I wouldn't have expected ever.

We arrived there by late at night and settled down quickly. There was a house on the west of the town where I stayed at during my time here. It was a little bit messy but nothing that couldn't be fixed in a few days time. The house belonged to some high wolf then, a man I couldn't really remember even if I wanted to. He had two sons, both long dead now, along with him.

Candice was quiet the whole way, throughout the evening and the night. She went straight to bed once we had managed to sort that out. It wasn't long before she was knocked out while I remained awake, lost in thoughts of my own.

There was a small garden behind the house, a backyard of sorts with a fountain that was already catching rust. It looked exactly the same as the last time I was here, years ago.

Nothing had changed, and the eerie feeling it gave me reminded me of when I was here.

By the next evening, I was out and about while Candice stayed at the house to fix things she wanted to.

"It's good to see you back," Mr Carter said with his thick mustache and beard. "Have you moved in again? I saw the lights last night and figured I'd check in later to see who was around here."

"I'm not sure yet, but probably." I glanced over my shoulder at the house in the distance.

Mr. Carter lived on the opposite side, about two houses from where we were. He was a human, and he didn't know what I was, nor did anyone else. To him I was a kid who lived in that house for the longest time he knew and then left out of nowhere.

"You look better. Been a good life for you since you've left?"

"Yeah, it has. It's been good."

"Well," He placed his hand over my shoulder roughly. "Let me know if there's anything you need. Anything at all."

"Thank you."

"No problem, boy. You did plenty for me." He patted my shoulder again. "Remember that thing when you helped me lift that wooden plank that day? Now look at you. You're tall like a tree. And those muscles—"

"Ah, thank you Mr. Carter." I stopped him before he started embarrassing me. "Well, I should head out now. There are few things I need to get, arrange and all." I turned away to look ahead.

"Oh, yes. Yes." He patted my shoulder once more and finally stepped away. "I'll see you around."

I gave him a smile before walking away from where he was.

My phone buzzed in my pants again, for the second time in a row and as much as I wanted to ignore it, I couldn't. Getting back on the sidewalk, I pulled out my phone and looked at the caller ID.

Cain.

Looking up, I saw the house and my car, the one I was meant to take for the things I needed to get tonight. But it seemed like a little walking wasn't going to do much harm.

The market wasn't too far away.

Turning around, I attended Cain's call and started walking in the direction of the market. I held my phone with my ear as I passed through the sidewalk that was filled with people walking and kids running around.

"Cain," I mumbled. "How are you doing?"

"Good."

"Sorry, I couldn't speak earlier. I was a little bit occupied." I apologized for ignoring his call last night when I was with Candice then. "Tell me. Everything's alright?"

"Yeah, it's fine here. All good. I just wanted to ask you something."

"Yeah?" I crossed the street and then made my way forward. "About?"

"When do you plan on returning?"

I breathed deeply, "I'm trying to stay out of trouble."

"I understand that, obviously. But I wanted to sit down, talk and all. I haven't seen you since—"

"A while."

"Yes," I could hear him getting a bit restless. "And there's something else as well."

"Tell me."

"You told me once that you had the ability to sense Candice. Do you still have that ability?"

Oh. Right.

"I do. But like I've told you, it's difficult for me to sense her or get into her mind when I'm far away. The only times I could do it was when she was in Thornwood and I was nearby. It wasn't always, Cain." I explained to him as much as I could.

"Yes, I know. But that is why I'm asking you if you'd be able to come here. It won't take long." he insisted, continuing on.

I kept walking further and further while thinking about his words for a moment. Lying to him was the only option I had. Candice didn't want them to know where she was, and I doubt they would like to know where she was if they had any idea of what she had become.

"I don't do well with werewolves around," I told him. "But I can give it a thought. Where are you?"

"Thornwood."

"And Knox?"

"He has left town for a bit."

I stopped walking right then and there. Did he leave town? That didn't really sound right.

"Where did he go?"

"He found a lead and headed in that direction," Cain paused, "It's a long story. Something with a vision."

"What vision? Of Candice?"

"Yes. They are still bonded, or I believe they still are, even after the whole—transformation. It came to him a couple of days ago, a glimpse of her in this club. I'm not sure where that is, but he's probably heading in that direction. Perhaps she's there."

Fuck.

"Perhaps."

"Well, do let me know if you can make it here."

"I'll try to see what I can do." I looked away from the man standing across the street from me. "Give me some time. I'll call you by tomorrow night and let you know. And if Knox manages to find her or anything else, you let me know too."

"Of course." He replied, and I decided it was time for me to hang up. "Bye."

"Bye." The line dropped, and I pulled my phone away from my ear and looked down at the screen.

Fuck.

This wasn't good. The vision—Candice had the same vision when she saw Knox at the club a week ago. Which meant he could potentially find us and that was bad. Real bad.

The mark. His mark on her.

It had to be gone, and I was going to make sure of it. It wasn't just about protecting them from Candice anymore, and it was also about the very new, growing bond between us. Maybe I just didn't want her going back to them or anyone at all.

Maybe I was beginning to prefer the idea of her being with me. Side by side. And only me.

Was this—jealousy?
