CHAPTER 13

Candice

"Get up," A hand shook my arm. "You sleep like a log. How are you still sleeping after hearing my voice for over half an hour? Or do you choose to ignore it and the very danger we're in—"

I pressed my hands against my ears. "Stop talking. God. I'm awake."

"Open your eyes."

"No, I don't want to." I rolled onto my right side, where the bed was empty.

Gideon paced behind, all around the sides of the bed, back and forth. I could hear his footsteps and then his voice.

"I took care of the wolf's body. Buried him somewhere quite far away and left no trail, so there's something you don't have to worry about. I've also managed to get a new car for us—borrowing someone's car. I would need to return it by the week's end as it will probably reported stolen by then." He paused for a moment. "Did you know that I went through the trouble of getting us a car while you were sleeping?"

"Yes, I heard that." I peeked my eye open to look at him.

"Which part?"

"All of it." I rubbed my eyes and stretched out.

"We should get on the road—"

"Again?"

"Yes," he said, throwing the covers completely off the bed and revealing to me the coldness of the air conditioning. We should leave now, and we'll reach Highvale before morning."

"Highvale?" I cocked a brow at him.

"It's the town I mostly spent my time hiding in. It's close to Thornwood, hundred—two hundred miles away."

I jolted up straight at the sound of that. "Why would we go there? We're avoiding wolves, and aren't there going to be many of them there?"

"There were wolves once that resided there, but as I had told you, I killed them all and stayed in one of their houses for the most part of my life. What remains in Highvale is nothing but humans. Plenty of them. No wolves ever come there." He stood up, pacing towards the duffel bag containing clothes. "They all fear it. Thinking it's cursed or something."

My eyes followed his movements as I sat up on my arms. "What about my grandfather? I want to go somewhere where he won't know. Like at all."

"And that's the best option we have. No one knows about it. No wolves, no vampires. No one."

"Are you sure about that?"

"I'm certain," He said, moving closer and holding out a hand to me. I took it as I pulled myself up on my feet and then over the edge of the bed. "You won't regret this. We'll be perfectly fine there. That woman—"

"Lucy."

"She cannot track us down. She will not find us. Trust me, Candice. My father was hunting me for a long time once I fled the orphanage, and he could never find me even when I was so close to him." He cupped my cheek, stroking it softly.

"What about your brothers?"

"It's a coastal town, Highvale is. Wolves enjoy the wilderness, but there's no wilderness there. They won't be searching for us, for you, and it'll be fine. Okay?"

"Yeah, okay." I gave him a nod.

"Now, come on. Change, freshen up, wash, whatever you want. Then we'll leave."

"Alright."

We got on the road quickly. I managed to get nothing in my stomach, but that was fine as I had a lot of blood the night before. It kept me satisfied. I wasn't really stressed about the wolves anymore or crossing paths with them, considering now that I did manage to have some control.
