I'm pretty sure, I mean I've heard, you never faced it

George Russell POV

My birthday and Valentine's Day are coming up, and I am single, as expected. I was at my apartment with friends, more precisely Alex, Lily, and Nina.

I know they saw Melanie on Nina's birthday; I had breakfast with Nina, and she insisted I should go and keep my distance, but we both know how that wouldn't work, at least for me.

"Your phone is ringing!" Lily screams as Alex was in the kitchen.

"Put it on speaker," he asks as he gets closer.

"Alex?" A shaky voice is heard and everyone in that room knew it was Melanie and Alex paralyzes.

"Mel? What's up? Are you cold? Need a ride?" He asks worriedly and then we hear the sob.

"I- Kind of. The- Fuck. The police said I needed to call someone, and they let me use my phone," we were all in complete panic, and I put my jacket on.

"Police? What happened?" He is closely behind putting on his jacket, too.

"I had to. Oh, Alex. I am so sorry to put you in this mess, you are the oldest and I couldn't call dad. If I didn't have to, I wouldn't call," she is crying and my heart is breaking as we walk to my car. Nina and Lily are just following us with panic on their faces.

"Where are you? I will meet you there and we can talk," he tries to get information before she breaks.

"Sir? She is at the Royal London Hospital. Ask for her name, and you can meet her in the room. She needs someone here," a male voice says. He takes a deep breath, closes his eyes, and scratches his forehead.

"I will be there in 15 minutes," he announces before the call goes off, and I drive off as everyone has their seatbelts on.

10 minutes later we were there, maybe I committed some infractions to get us there that fast but who cared at this point? Only the police.

"I am here for Melanie Albon," he informs at the reception, and I see her looking at the four of us.

"How are you related to her?" She asks as she leaves her desk to join us.

"I am her brother; he is her boyfriend," it slips out, and she nods.

"Stay here girls, you can go in after, we don't need to overwhelm her," she asks politely and nod, sitting on the waiting chairs and holding hands nervously.

We were on edge, but getting to her room and seeing a police outside was not very calming.

"Mel?" Alex enters, and I feel reticent, but the man signals me to go in, and I do.

"Oh, God. Ask them to let me out. I can't be here any more hours," she walking from side to side, turning to Alex and just then seeing me. And she stops.

"What happened?" Alex asks as he puts his hands on her shoulders.

"Oliver was at my apartment when I got home yesterday from dinner," she tells him and I see his shoulders tensing.

"What did he do?" He asks worriedly.

She wasn't in a bad state; she had slightly bruised wrists from him, probably holding her. Her arms had some bruises, but her face was intact; only her lips looked slightly swollen.

"I knew this would happen. It was stupid of me not to have moved, but I couldn't find anything, and I didn't want to worry. So when he attacked me, I attacked him back," she is just rambling and all alarms went off in my head.

"You knew he was after you and you didn't tell anyone?" I asked her as I felt like I was going crazy with her thought process.

"I couldn't! He had everything on me. On you, too. He would ruin you and your career. I needed to keep this quiet. I need a lawyer," she suddenly remembers it and Alex nods.

"You need a lawyer to defend yourself? That's some bullshit," he growls.

"I killed him. In self-defense, but I did," she spills out, paralyzing us.

"You killed him?" I try to make sure I'm not crazy.

"I stabbed him once in the chest, and he fell off of me; he was strangling me. I called 112, and they tried to revive him but couldn't. I did everything right, but I still need to give a statement, and they will investigate the case," she moves and I can finally see her neck, that looked bad. He was going to kill her.

"I'm calling my lawyer. Can you leave the hospital?" I ask as I see her sitting on the hospital bed.

"I think so, they just needed someone to be responsible for me," she is not sure so I leave the room and look at the policeman.

"Can we take her home? I will talk to my lawyer, and she will give you a statement tomorrow morning. She needs a good shower and a good night of sleep," I explain calmly and he nods.

"Sure. But if she doesn't show up before tomorrow ends, we will issue an arrest warrant. And we truly don't want that," he warns me, and I nod.

"Let's go," I tell them, and I take my jacket off, putting it on her shoulders.

"Are you okay?" Nina stands from the chair as we approach and I see Mel looking at Alex annoyed.

"We were all at George's apartment," Alex explains and the policeman does her check out of the hospital, giving us her wallet and phone.

"The apartment can't be used for now. It's a crime scene until the investigation ends," he informs her, and she nods.

"Thank you," she takes her stuff and we go to the car, driving to my apartment.

This was not the encounter I imagined having with her. And what did she mean when she said he would ruin me and my career?
