**Chapter 3:"Breaking Through" **

You entered the library again, heart heavy with uncertainty. Felix had been distant during your last meeting, and the weight of his coldness lingered in your mind. You hoped that today would be different, but you prepared yourself for disappointment as you found your usual spot at the table.

As you waited, you noticed students around you chatting and laughing, their energy contrasting sharply with the tension you felt in the air. Finally, Felix walked in, his expression as unreadable as ever. He sat down without a word, flipping through his phone again.

**You:** “Hey, did you have a chance to think about the project?”

He didn’t look up, his fingers tapping rapidly against the screen.

**Felix:** “Not really.”

Your heart sank at his lack of engagement. You took a deep breath, trying to remain composed.

**You:** “Well, I was thinking we could focus on a character from one of our readings and analyze their development. It might be easier to work together if we pick something concrete.”

Felix finally glanced at you, his expression still guarded.

**Felix:** “Fine. Pick one.”

His indifference stung, but you pushed through the frustration.

**You:** “How about we analyze the protagonist from the last book we read? Their journey could lead to some interesting discussions about personal growth.”

Felix leaned back, crossing his arms.

**Felix:** “Sure. You do all the work, and I’ll just agree with whatever you say.”

His sarcasm made your blood boil, but you forced yourself to stay calm.

**You:** “That’s not how collaboration works, Felix. I need your input. This is a team project.”

He sighed, clearly annoyed.

**Felix:** “Whatever. Just tell me what to do.”

You felt a wave of disappointment wash over you, but you decided to try a different tactic.

**You:** “Let’s make it a bit more interesting. We can each write our own analysis and then combine them. That way, you can show me your perspective.”

Felix raised an eyebrow, looking slightly intrigued, though he quickly masked it.

**Felix:** “Why do you care so much?”

**You:** “Because I want to do well, and I believe we can create something great together. It’s not just about the grade; it’s about the experience.”

He met your gaze, and for a fleeting moment, you thought you saw a hint of vulnerability in his eyes, but it disappeared as quickly as it came.

**Felix:** “Experience doesn’t matter when you’re just another cog in the system.”

**You:** “Maybe, but I’d rather enjoy the journey than just get through it.”

Felix scoffed, rolling his eyes again.

**Felix:** “Easy for you to say. You don’t have the same expectations I do.”

His words cut deep, and you struggled to keep your composure.

**You:** “And what are those expectations? To be perfect? To always be the best?”

His silence was deafening. You could see him grappling with something beneath his icy exterior, but he was clearly reluctant to share.

**You:** “You know, it’s okay to feel pressure, but shutting everyone out won’t make it easier.”

He finally looked at you, his expression shifting slightly.

**Felix:** “I don’t need sympathy.”

**You:** “I’m not trying to give you sympathy. I’m just saying you don’t have to go through this alone.”

Felix scoffed again, but there was less conviction in his tone this time.

**Felix:** “You really think I’m going to change just because you care?”

**You:** “I don’t know. But I think you’d be happier if you let people in.”

For a moment, you both fell into silence, the tension between you thick with unspoken words. You could feel his walls starting to crack, but he quickly reinforced them.

**Felix:** “You don’t know anything about me.”

**You:** “Then tell me. Let me understand.”

Felix shook his head, his expression hardening again.

**Felix:** “I don’t owe you any explanations.”

You sighed, realizing that breaking through his defenses wouldn’t be easy.

**You:** “You’re right. You don’t owe me anything. But you’re missing out on a chance for a real connection.”

He seemed taken aback, his icy demeanor faltering for a moment.

**Felix:** “Why do you care?”

Your heart raced at the question.

**You:** “Because I see you, Felix. I see beyond the cold exterior. I know there’s more to you than what you show.”

His gaze softened slightly, and for a moment, you both shared an understanding that transcended words. But just as quickly, he withdrew again, masking his emotions behind his usual facade.

**Felix:** “I’m not here to make friends. I’m just trying to get through school.”

With that, he returned to his phone, and the warmth of the moment dissipated like mist in the sun.

Feeling defeated, you packed your things, knowing you had given it your all but realizing that he still wasn’t ready to let anyone in.

**You:** “I’ll see you tomorrow.”

He didn’t respond, his attention already back on his screen. As you left the library, you felt a mixture of disappointment and determination. You knew Felix had a heart beneath the ice, and you were determined to reach it—even if it took time.
