chapter two ━ the scooby gang ( season one, episode two )

𝐏𝐈𝐏𝐄𝐑 𝐒𝐓𝐎𝐎𝐃 𝐈𝐍 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐋𝐈𝐁𝐑𝐀𝐑𝐘 beside her father while Chase, Buffy, Xander, and Willow gathered around the table. After rescuing the latter two, and attempting to explain what had happened to them, the Summers twins had cornered the father and daughter at the beginning of the school day.
Well, Buffy did. Chase appeared to have been dragged along.
"This world is older than any of you know," Giles said to the teenagers while Piper leaned against the stair banister. "Contrary to popular mythology, it did not begin as a paradise. For untold eons, demons walked the Earth. They made it their home, their... their Hell. But in time, they lost their purchase of this reality. The way was made for mortal animals, for—for man. All that remains of the old ones are vestiges, certain magics, certain creatures..."
Chase nodded. "Vampires."
"Okay, this is where I have a problem," Xander interjected. "See, because we're talking about vampires. We're having a talk with vampires in it."
"Isn't that what we saw last night?" Willow asked the room.
"No," Buffy replied, shaking her head. "No, those weren't vampires, those were just guys in thundering need of a facial." Chase raised his eyebrows and looked at her. "Or maybe they had rabies; it could have been rabies. A—And that guy turning to dust? Just a trick of light." She looked around. "That's exactly what I said the first time I saw a vampire. Well, after I was done with the screaming part."
Chase tilted his head. "She does a powerful set of lungs."
"Oh, I—I need to sit down," Willow said and Piper glanced at her.
"You are sitting, darling."
Willow looked down at the wooden piece of furniture. "Oh. Good for me."
"So..." Xander turned back to Giles and Piper. "Vampires are demons?"
Piper let out a small breath. "The books say that the last demon to leave this reality fed off of a human and mixed their blood," she replied, sitting on the table. "He was a human form possessed, infected by the demon's soul. He bit another and another, and they walked the Earth... feeding, killing some, and mixing their blood with others to make more of their kind. Waiting for the animals to die out, and the old ones to return."
Giles nodded. "And that is why there's a need for a Slayer."
"And that would be a what?" Xander asked.
"For as long as there have been vampires, there's been the Slayer," he said, wiping his glasses clean. "One girl in all the world—a Chosen One."
Buffy looked at Xander and Willow. "He loves doing this part."
