Tommy blinked, wincing at the bright lights. He turned to look and frowned. Why was he in a hospital? Surely the stomach ache that he'd had when he was trying to go sleep wasn't that bad, but mums tend to overreact.
Some strange teenage girl was sitting next to him while doctor did... something. The girl was texting frantically on her phone, glancing up every few seconds. Tommy didn't recognize her, but she had red hair, so she was probably a cousin or something.
When the girl saw Tommy looking, she put her phone away and smiled, leaning forward. "Hey Bruno, how are you feeling?" the girl asked.
Tommy turn to look at the doctor, waiting for him to respond. "Bruno, she asked something. Didn't realize people called doctors anything other than doctor, but eh," he shrugged.
The girl straightened, and the doctor exchanged a look with her. "ETA?" the doctor turned to ask the driver.
"Two minutes. An OR is prepped," the driver called back.
Tommy sighed. What was even the big deal? Apart from an annoying headache, he felt perfectly fine. No big deal. He turned to look at the girl again, and frowned when he spotted his reflection in the window. When did Tommy age up? he must have missed that. Didn't look too bad, pretty much an older, taller version of himself with more freckles and lighter hair. And the dent in the side of his head that had leaked blood into his hair. Pretty much the same.
So... he was not the same. Apparently he was someone else entirely. Bruno Carrelli from Jersey City. Only a few miles from Westview, so he wasn't completely uprooted.
The weird ginger girl was apparently his classmate Zoe Zimmer. After the doctors had taken Tommy to surgery for some reason, Zoe had came in to explain what had happened.
So apparently he was helping some teenage superhero with some of his friends and Zoe, and when some agent person tried to shoot the hero behind her back and Bruno jumped in the path of the bullet and got shot in the head. Super fun. Tommy felt like a lot was missing, but Zoe kept muttering about government interventions and glancing at security cameras.
Right as Zoe finished, two girls ran into the room. One of them had light skin and was wearing a hijab, while the second girl had dark hair and brown skin. "Bruno!" the dark haired girl went to hug him immediately, but the first girl held her back. "Kamala, you remember what we talked about?" she whispered.
Kamala nodded. "Right. Sorry. I'm Kamala Khan, nice to meet you," she nodded, pain in her eyes.
"Cool. I'm Bruno, I guess," Tommy shrugged, before turning to the other girl. "I'm going to assume that you are Nika? Nakia?"
"Nakia, yeah," Nakia nodded. "How are you feeling?"
"Like hospital food is disgusting and eating chocolate," Tommy sighed. "Any idea where a vending machine is?"
The three girls looked taken aback. "Listen, Bruno, there's something we need to tell you," Kamala wrung her hands, debating how to break some news to him.
"If it's about you being the super teen or whatever your name is, I already know," Tommy shrugged. The girl gaped, and Tommy pointed at the television by his bed. He'd recognized her instantly from the news story about the event. "Night light is a stupid name."
"Blame Zoe," Kamala sighed. "I'm sorry I couldn't save you."
"What exactly happened?" Tommy settled back.
"This friend of ours Kamran got powers like mine, but he was in a lot of pain and out of control, so the Department of Damage Control came after him. Nakia, Zoe, my brother Aamir, and you were trying to stall so Kamran could flee the country. You all got arrested, and Kamran went to go fight Damage Control after learning his mother had died. He lost control, and I trapped us both in this dome, made a hole in the ground leading to the docks, and began to take the dome down. A woman from Damage Control started shooting while my back was turned, and you ran in the way of the bullets and got shot in the head," Kamala explained.
"Dope. So what exactly are your powers besides growing and glowing?" Tommy asked. "How did you get them? I have so many questions."
"You're more interested in that than your own life?" Zoe raised an eyebrow.
"My life sounds boring. This is much more interesting," Tommy gestured to the seats. "Explain, please. And I'm in hospital because of you technically, so you can't say no."
Nakia covered her mouth to hide her laughter, Zoe was taken aback, and Kamala seemed lost for words. Kamala opened and shut her mouth, then pulled up her sleeve to reveal and gold bangle on her wrist. "It's my great-grandmother's from another dimension. It's a long story, but she was searching for it so she could return home. My nana sent it in the mail, and when I put it on I got powers. Light comes out of me, and it hardens," Kamala explained.
"Let me guess, you called it 'Hard Light'?" Tommy guessed. Kamala flushed red. "Knew it. Have you got a better name, because Night Light sucks."
"Sorry," Zoe winced. "I didn't have time to come up with anything better."
"What about Photon, or literally anything?" Tommy shrugged. "Moving on. What now? Are you going to become a superhero or something?"
Kamala nodded. "Maybe one day I'll even get to meet Captain Marvel," she sighed dreamily.
Tommy frowned. "Who?" Was she a celebrity or something? The name wasn't familiar.
The three blinked, turning to him. "I thought you still had your semantic memory?" Nakia whispered.
"My what?"
"What's H2O?" She said suddenly.
"Water. Everyone knows that," Tommy frowned at the subject change. What was the point of that?
"Who is Tony Stark?" Nakia asked. At the lack of recognition on his face, she began listing names. "Bruce Banner? Steve Rogers? Natasha Romanoff? Clint Barton? Thor?"
"Isn't he a Norse god?" Tommy asked.
"Ultron? Bucky Barnes? Carol Danvers? Nick Fury? Thanos? Vision?" Tommy straightened, and Nakia paused. "Interesting."
"Vision as in Wanda and Vision?" Tommy checked to make sure they were talking about the same robot. "The red flying robot Vision?"
"Yes," Zoe leaned forward. "Who made Vision?"
"Wanda, I'm guessing," Tommy guessed after a second. His parents had never mentioned that bit of information. They never mentioned any of these people that apparently he should know.
"Actually, it was Tony Stark and Bruce Banner, but since you don't know who they are apparently, it is going to take way too long to explain all the lore. We'll explain later, it's fine," Kamala sighed, sweeping her hair out of her eyes. "Would you excuse us for a moment?" Tommy gestured to the door, and the three girls left, shutting the door behind them.
Why hadn't Mum told him about any of these people that she apparently knew? Was it something to do with the giant glowing hex she'd put over Westview. Why had she done that anyway? If she wanted kids so badly, she could have just adopted instead of making them in a fake reality and mind controlling an entire town. And if Tommy had body jumped, did that mean Billy had too? Billy would probably have it easier with his mind reading powers-
Wait, did he still have those? If the reality was gone, did that mean their powers were too?
Tommy looked at his left hand, which was lying on his lap. He began tapping his leg and keeping his superspeed restricted to just his hand. Soon his hand was a blur, and Tommy smirked, relaxing his muscles.
This was going to be fun.
