Mari was sat in the leather seat of David's car, which was, to say the least, just as messy as his office.

He was at the wheel, staring out through the window, and neither one of them had said a word.

The inside of the car smelled a lot like his office, but the faint smell of leather was also added to the mix.

There was an impenetrable silence hanging thickly in the air between them, neither daring to say a word.

Mari decided to test the waters and said, "you know, neither one of us know anything about the other."

David turned to look at her. "What do you mean?"

"I mean, we're practically strangers."

"Does it matter?" David asked bitterly.

Mari bit her lip. "Well, no, but-"

"Let me tell you something," David interrupted. "I don't care about you."

Mari was taken aback.

"I am not here to make friends. If you think we're going to go to carnivals and ride the ferris wheel with each other while eating cotton candy, you're dreadfully mistaken. I'm not planning on going any further in our relationship than where we are now."

Mari coughed. "Wow."

David looked back ahead of him and gripped the steering wheel.

"I just wanted to know a bit more about you."

"No," David replied as he looked around the corner and drove. "I'm only here to do my job. Don't get in the way."

Mari sighed.

After a few silent moments, she ran her fingers through her hair and said, "so what's your favorite color?"

David shook his head. "I said no, Mari."

"Oh, come on," Mari groaned. "What harm could knowing your favorite color do?"

David didn't move. He kept his eyes trained on the road ahead of him.

There were a few more moments of silence, and then Mari heard a faint voice beside her say, "red."

She looked down and smiled, not replying. They were quiet the rest of the car ride.

There was yellow "do not cross" police tape everywhere. There was chalk on the ground where Peter's body had been, numbered cards identifying evidence.

There were people everywhere, taking pictures and examining the scene. People were crowded around, watching the police.

David didn't hesitate to pull the police tape over his head and walk into the restricted area. Mari stopped and bit her lip, awkwardly standing at the sidelines.

David turned around.

"Is there a reason I'm not hearing your annoying voice?" He teased.

Mari laughed. "Am I allowed to...?"

David shook his head. "Come on, Takahashi."

Mari giggled and ducked under the police tape, reaching the other side. She ran up to David and laughed, "I feel like I'm breaking the rules!"

She thought she caught a faint smile find its way to David's lips, but he quickly coughed and rushed up to the dark haired man who had been watching them.

Mari followed him, and the first thing the man said was, "who's this?"

David stepped aside and gestured toward Mari.
