It was calm for a long time after that.
David moved out of his and Sabrina's old apartment and into my new one, the killer was identified as Wesley Johnson and was arrested, and finally, everything seemed right.
Ian and Melanie had been invited over to Mari and David's apartment for dinner, and needless to say, it was a little awkward.
"So, David," a heavily pregnant Melanie began, setting down her knife and fork. "Initially you chose Sabrina over Mari?"
"Mel-" Mari began.
"Yes," David answered, and hastily added, "but I realized I had made a mistake a week in and, well, came back."
Melanie seemed to accept his answer and went back to eating.
Mari cleared her throat. "How about some board games? Everyone likes board games!"
Ian quickly agreed, saying, "do you have monopoly, are really any long, drawn-out game to cut the tension?"
Mari replied, "We could combine Monopoly, chess, and Risk?"
Ian exclaimed, "perfect! I'll go help you set it up!"
They left the table, leaving Melanie and David sitting there.
Melanie kept looking at him, eyeing him over, as if she was analyzing him.
"You aren't going to hurt her, are you?"
"Maybe I'll go help Ian and Mari, man do I love Mari so much," he said, rising from the table.
"Sit your ass back down," she commanded.
"Yes ma'am," he said quickly, sitting down as quickly as he had gotten up.
"I know I'm making this awkward, but I'm overprotective of her."
No shit, David wanted to say, but decided against it.
"And I'm nine months pregnant and allowed to get critical and angry."
"Nine months? Wow! When's your due date?"
"Don't change the subject, Moss."
"Okay," he said.
"Will you marry her?"
David laughed. "Well, we both know what happens when I get engaged to someone-"
"So you're going to cheat on her and then leave her?"
David gulped. "I was just-"
"You were just joking, yeah, don't do it again."
David nodded and looked down at his plate.
"You interrupted my wedding."
"I-I did. I'm sorry about that-"
"If you do get engaged, will you ruin her's?"
"No, no of course not!"
"Won't run out on her?"
"What? No!"
Melanie sat back and scanned his face.
"I think I'm going to go help my husband and Mari."
She got up (with some difficulty, but refused David's help) and left.
David let out a breath and groaned.
It was a long night.
*
Ian and Melanie had finally left, and it was just David and Mari at home.
"So?" Mari asked, linking her arms around David's neck.
"So what?" He smiled, wrapping his around her waist as she swayed them excessively side to side.
"Did you like them?"
David laughed. "Of course I did. Melanie was a little bit overprotective, though."
Mari rolled her eyes and giggled. "Typical. She's gonna give birth any minute, though, so cut her some slack."
David smiled and kissed her gently.
"I love you," he said.
"I love you too," she replied.

It happened exactly a day after that.
David and Mari had been walking back from a night out at a bar. They hadn't drank too much. David had only ordered a beer which Mari occasionally had taken sips of.
That was their first mistake.
Their second was deciding that their apartment was close enough to walk to.
The third was shrugging and taking a shortcut through an alleyway.
The alleyway.

"911, what's your emergency?"
"My boyfriend was attacked, and I was hit in the head-" the woman on the other line let out a choked sob. "This can't be happening again..."
"Ma'am, it'll be alright. Where are you?"
She told the operator where she was.
"We're sending policemen your way. Stay with me on the line, it'll be over soon."
"This can't be happening again," was all the frantic woman was able to say.
"The police should be there soon. Breathe in with me, dear, one, two three, out, one, two, three, in, one two three, out, one, two three..."
The operator and the woman stayed on the line for what seemed like so long before the police and an ambulance finally arrived on the scene.
The operator hung up before assuring her one last time that everything would be okay.
The woman didn't believe her.
It didn't turn out okay last time.
