A/N: This OS take place directly after the Père Lachaise's events. Enjoy!
Everything was smoke and darkness. Newt could barely see his brother, who was standing a few steps away. The echo of the roaring flames still rang in their ears.
Newt was feeling lost. In the space of a few moments, he had witnessed, helplessly, the departure of one of his closest friens, who had voluntarily joined the worst dark mage of all times; the only friend he had in school died before his eyes; and his brother, who had always been a rock, had collapsed in his arms.
Newt had never seen Theseus like this before, and it broke his heart. His brother had lost the love of his life, and Newt couldn't imagine how devastated Theseus must felt.
He gently take his brother's shoulder and apparated hem towards the grave's entrance, where they found Nicolas Flamel with Nagini and Jacob.
The Maledictus was sitting in a corner, and was sobbing quietly, her knees pulled up to her chest.
The alchemist had placed his hand on Jacob's shoulder, who was staring blankly into space. Newt was feeling sorry for his friend. He knew he loved Queenie with all his heart, and the fact that the young witch had joined Grindelwald because she believed that it would allow them to be together must have been even worse for the baker.
Newt looked around for the person he wanted to see the most, and he felt fear overcome him when he noticed that she was not there.
But before the question would pass his lips, a new crack sounded and two figures appeared.
Yusuf Kama, his face closed, gave a simple nod to the others before stepping away.
Newt paid him no attention. He was only focused on the shaky figure who had appeared besides Kama.
Tina seemed event more lost than Jacob. Her expression reflected the intense despair she felt. She had lost her sister. The only family she had left.
She wanted to move forward, but tripped over debris that had been thrown by explosions of blue flames.
But before she hit the ground, Newt had rushed forward and caught her in his arms.
He helped her stand up, but didn't let go of her. He hugged her against him.
The young woman clung to Newt as if he was the only point of attachment in the worst of storms.
Tina was shacking, and Newt knew that she was crying. Despite the despair he shared with her, the Magizoologist was infinitely relieved to have Tina.
He couldn't imagine how he would have felt if the young woman had disappeared for ever, like Leta.
Tina was feeling like she was immersed in a dark fog, unable to dinstinguish anything. The only thing she was aware of was Newt's presence.
She vaguely felt the familiar sensation of apparation, but Newt didn't let go of her. Tina was feeling like if he did, she would sink into nothingness and never be able to come out again.
Newt apparated them to Nicolas Flamel's house, who had offered to host them until the next day.
Jacob and Nagini followed immediately the alchemist upstairs. Theseus had returned to the Ministère des Affaires Magiques with Travers, so Newt and Tina were the only left.
Newt sat them gently on the couch. Tina instinctively curled up against him, and her sobs increased in intensity. Newt rocked her gently, waiting for her tears to dry up.
Eventually, Tina's breath calmed down, and she moved away, wiping her eyes.
« I'm s-sorry, » she stammered, looking away.
« Tina, » said Newt, gently but firmly. « Tina, look at me. » He placed two fingers under the young woman's chin, prompting her eyes up. Their eyes finally met. « Tina, » he continued. « You have no reason to apologize. You have the right to cry, you don't have to feel guilty. Nothing of what happened was your fault. »
« Yes, » whispered Tina, her eyes tearing up again. « If I hadn't argued with Queenie— »
« Tina, » Newt interrupted. « This is not your fault. It's not because of anyone that Queenie left. »
« But if I had apologized... I should never have said those things to her. If she had forgiven me... »
« But she had forgave you, » answered Newt quietly. « It was to see you that she had gone to Paris. »
« Really? » Tina asked, her voice barely audible, loosing herself in Newt's eyes.
He nodded. « Stop blaming yourself, » he whispered. « You are not responsible for you sister's actions. »
Tina took a shaky breath. « Thank you, » she whispered. « And... I've never really apologized for stopping writing to you. I-I'm sorry, I... I should have known that you were not the guy to do something like that. »
Newt shook his head. « It's not your fault. I would probably have reacted the same way, in your shoes. »
« You know very well you would've not, » Tina whispered with a weak smile. « I'm sorry. »
Newt reached out and tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear. His fingers lingered a little longer than necessary on the young woman's cheek.
Tina looked into Newt's green eyes. She had really missed him, even if the months who had followed the article's publication had been awful. Her heart had been broken.
A tear rolled down Tina's cheek while she remembered how she had felt.
Almost by reflexe, Newt reached out to wipe her cheek. Before he could take out his fingers, Tina placed her hand on his.
Their faces were only centimeters appart. Their eyes expressed all the emotions they couldn't put into words.
Gently, Newt leaned towards Tina, and their lips met. Tina immediatly kissed him back. She wrapped her arms around his neck, and he hugged her tightly. They kissed slowly for a long time, each enjoying the presence of the other.
When they finally parted, they remained silent, and Tina curled up again against Newt, resting her head on his shoulder. Newt put a protective arm around the young woman, who slowly drifted to sleep.
Thy didn't get much sleep, that night, curled up together on the couch. The cemetery's events kept playing in their minds.
But now, they were together. It was like a ray of light had crossed the darkness.
