Chapter 6 - Memories

When Chris didn't come back, Alby forbid us to go into the maze for the rest of the day.

The next morning I woke up at 5:00 and went straight into the maze. I looked everywhere, but there was no sign of Chris. When I came back everyone was mad at me.

Apparently they thought that the grievers had gotten me aswell, and I could tell that Newt had been crying.

I couldn't handle all the emotions being thrown my way, so I just escaped to my hut for the rest of the day.

                             5 months later

I was sitting at one of the tables eating breakfast with Minho, Ben and Newt. No one else was awake, not ever Frypan.

Me, Minho and Ben were awake early (as usual) so we could run the maze as soon as the walls opened. Newt woke up because Minho decided to push me so I fell in the dirt, and that may or may not have ended up in me yelling at him.

After that, he couldn't fall back asleep, so he joined us at breakfast.

Minho passed the runners test, so currently he and Ben were running together. I ran alone most of the time, as I'd been a runner the longest.

The other runners had their day off, so it was just us three.

After we finished our breakfast, we said bye to Newt and headed for the maze.

"You know, you might wanna take a shower when you get back. You kind of stink." Minho told me me with a satisfyed smirk on his face.

"Yeah, you should probably take a shower aswell." I shrugged as Minho gave me a confused look.

"Why should I? I'm not dirty and I don't stink either." He gave me an annoyed look.

I reached down to tie my shoelaces. Or at least that's what Ben and Minho thought.

When they had walked ahead and had their backs turned to me, I took a run for it and jumped onto Minho from behind.

He tried to push me away but i made sure to hold on tight, and to make him just as dirty as I was. I also made sure to not forget to mess his hair up.

"Ryann! Come on, not the hair." He said pissed as he was finally able to push me off of him.

"Like I said, you're gonna have to take a shower too." I said with an innocent smile before turning my eyes to Ben, who just laughed lightly and shook his head.

Me and Minho had grown quite close over the past few months. We both connected through shared humour and running together almost everyday.

In the last few weeks, he started running with Ben instead. After the incident with Chris, a few of the runners quit, so we were even fewer than before.

It made me sad, but I did understand why they did it.

I parted ways with Minho and Ben and ran deep into the maze. I mapped my path in my mind, but as usual, there was nothing new to be discovered.

I ran through section 8, desperately trying to find something I'd missed all the previous times. After hours of searching, all my hope was gone, and I went to the place where I usually meet Minho and Ben for lunch.

I sat down and took my lunch out of my bag as i heard footsteps approaching. I saw Minho and Ben jog around the corner before they sat down beside me.

"Found anything interesting?" Ben asked.

"I don't know, take a wild guess." I replied.

"Wow, someone's in a good mood." Minho said, giving me a pointy look.
