"Come on, Ryan, don't be stupid," Avery wasn't a little girl anymore, but to her I was still just a little boy.

"Where's your sense of adventure?" I asked.

"Where's your common sense? Honestly, you're going to break your neck."

I laughed, "You always say that. I'm telling you there's nothing to worry about."

"And you always say that! You would be dead already if it wasn't for me. I don't know how you would've made it to fifteen without my protection." Avery glanced down the cliff into the water and shivered.

"Hey," I held my best friend's shoulders and looked into her eyes, "It will be fine. People do this all the time."

"Yeah, and people break their necks by doing this all of the time too."

"I'm careful." Avery raised an eyebrow at me.

"You, careful? Ha! As if," she scoffed.

"I'm careful because I have you," I smiled. Avery blushed a light shade of pink.

Her bright red hair had darkened into auburn and many of her freckles had disappeared. She no longer had braces but her eyes were the same emerald green as when we had met. She was beautiful. But she wasn't just a pretty face, she was smarter than me in almost everything except for music, of course. She couldn't sing to save her life and instruments were useless pieces of wood in her hands.

Avery was always uptight about things that I wanted to do that she deemed "dangerous." At times I could get her to let lose and have fun, and when she did she seemed to become even more beautiful than before.

"Why don't you just do this with your girlfriend?" Avery asked, the question sent a lump in my throat, "Where is she anyway? I thought she would be here for your birthday."

"I walked in on her making out with Aaron," I blurted out. I hadn't told anyone else that.

"Oh," Avery looked down. She looked like she might cry, "I'm sorry, Ryan."

"Yeah, whatever," I let go of Avery. "Go ahead, say you told me so."

"Ryan," she looked into my eyes, "I'm not going to say that. Honestly, though, are you surprised?" I looked down, shifting my weight between each foot.

"Not really," I sighed and looked out over the ocean, stretching on for miles. The sun was beginning to set and it left an orange glow reflecting off the water. I felt Avery's small, soft hand gently hold mine. I looked at her, the wind tossed her auburn hair about her face. I swear she gets more beautiful with every passing moment. She smiled softly as we stared into each other's eyes before she laughed.

"Why do you I always let you talk me into these kind of things?" Avery shook her head. I chuckled.

"Because you already secretly want to," I smirked at her. She scoffed and punched my shoulder playfully.

"You're such a dyngus!" Then she grabbed my hand and we ran towards the edge of the cliff and jumped. Avery screamed as we fell and I laughed.

"WOOOO!" I yelled as we plunged into the blue ocean.

**************

I was awakened to a splash of water in my face.

"Get up," a mysterious figure loomed over me, his entire body shroud in a black robe that dragged on the floor and a hood completely covered his face in darkness. "I won't ask you again, no get up!"
