This chapter's gonna be a little long. We're nearing the end of season 2.

The mess hall was a frenzy of frantic movement and low, tense murmurs. Shadows flitted across the dimly lit room as people rushed to barricade every entrance, dragging tables, chairs, and anything remotely heavy to block doors and windows. The air was thick with adrenaline and the unmistakable metallic tang of fear, though no one dared show it outright. They were all too busy, too focused. The fight had only just begun.
Jasper's fingers clenched around the handle of a fire axe he'd pulled from an emergency box, his knuckles white and his gaze steely. He scanned the room, ready to spring into action at any hint of movement from beyond the walls. Across from him, Riley moved with a commanding presence, her voice cutting through the chaos as she ensured every barricade was secure. She hefted one end of a bunk bed alongside another teen, wedging it tightly against the door. Her voice rang out, sharp and determined. "We took the level! But now we hold it!" she yelled, her tone brooking no argument.
Jasper's jaw clenched, a grim smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. "They'll be coming," he muttered, mostly to himself, but loud enough for Riley to hear. "And we need to be ready."
Riley's eyes flashed as she grabbed a large, serrated knife off a nearby table, testing its weight in her hand before sliding it into her belt. Monty strode by, his face intense as he worked a portable console, his fingers flying over the device. "Leave the hallway cameras on," he instructed, barely looking up. "We're gonna need eyes out there."
Riley gave a low chuckle, raising an eyebrow at him. "Can you do that?" she asked, genuinely impressed. Jasper, too, turned with a hint of curiosity, the tension between them momentarily forgotten.
Monty smirked, glancing up briefly, a glint of amusement in his eyes. "Have you met me?" he replied, and without waiting for an answer, he crouched near the door panel, his fingers digging into a mess of exposed wires. Sparks flew as he adjusted a few connections, the faint buzz of the camera system powering on nearby. Riley looked on, clueless about what he was doing but willing to trust him.
"Where are we on the doors?" Jasper asked, his voice tense.
Monty didn't look back but nodded slightly as he continued his work. "Elevators are disabled. Other stairwell locks? Fried 'em. But this one," he grimaced, twisting a wire in frustration, "this one's a bit—"
Before he could finish, Riley snatched the axe from Jasper and slammed the blunt end against the panel, sending a crackling jolt of electricity up her arm and into the wires. Sparks flew, casting an eerie light that danced across their faces, forcing them to step back as a thin plume of smoke rose from the scorched panel.
Monty blinked, then shrugged, his eyes sparkling with a strange blend of admiration and humor. "Well," he deadpanned, "that works too." He shared a quick handshake with Jasper, the silent camaraderie between them saying more than words could.
Jasper looked back at Riley, who now stood with her hands on her hips, watching the teens around them with a ferocious determination. "How long do you think we can hold them off?" he asked, his voice low, almost a whisper.
Riley's gaze didn't waver, her jaw set with a defiant strength that seemed to radiate from her very core. She took a slow breath, then huffed, her voice rough and unyielding as steel. "As long as we have to. Till we're damn dead—and we won't be." She gave Jasper a solid clap on the back, a spark of fierce confidence in her eyes.
Around them, the barricades stood ready, and each face in the room wore an expression of determination, shoulders squared, weapons at the ready. In the silence that followed, they waited, hearts pounding, for the first sound of footsteps beyond the door.
