CHAPTER NINE.

The recovery was quick for Sebastian after the tender care of the nurse in the hospital wing. We had returned to classes as normal, and everything seemed to be back in place, except for the fact that we still hadn't found the potion, and, Ominis was furious with me. He had sent me owls several times this week, asking me to come speak with him when I had the chance.

Even if I wanted to, I knew it would only be a harsh conversation I didnt want to deal with. I knew he would only yell at me for doing things I knew were foolish and it would only make it tougher to deal with in my head. I had avoided the owls in hopes he would just give it a rest, but Ominis and I were best friends and I knew he wouldn't rest until he talked to me.

Giving in, I sent an owl myself, telling him to meet me at the Undercroft so we could talk. I walked down and stepped into the clock and sat on one of the tables waiting. After a few minutes, I heard Ominis"s gentle steps behind me, I turned to see him navigating towards me before sitting in the chair opposite of me. Judging by his facial expression, I knew he wasn't happy, but I wouldn't be happy with me either if I was him.

"So you really think I wouldn't find out about what's been going on?" He said, putting his wand down on the table, crossing his arms, and leaning back in the wooden chair.

"Nothing is going on." I tried to lie though I knew Ominis wasn't stupid. He scoffed.

"I've heard what everyone has been saying. How you and Sebastian have been hanging out more, acting like friends again. And..." He paused for a moment. "about how you look pale and sickly. Don't tell me you've continue to allow Sebastian to drain your essence." He said, giving me the benefit of the doubt. I knew I would only cause him more disappointment, which I wish I wouldn't have to.

"You might not believe me but, I'm doing this for his own good, to stop him from killing himself before he reaches the potion." I reply, picking at the skin around my nails. Ominis lets out a humorless laugh.

"For his own good? Or because you're so blindly in love with him that you'd let him practically drain you?" He spat out. I flinched my eyes shut. I knew he was right, I was letting Sebastian get away with so much simply because of my feelings, but I stood on my plan. I would save him eventually, this was just a tiny detail that made the big picture, and he simply didnt understand that.

"It doesn't matter. Don't you trust my judgement, Ominis?" I asked, wanting him to say he did. After all, seeing him disappointed in me hurt me as much as Sebastian did when he gave me the cold shoulder upon his return. I knew Ominis was wise and calculated, and his opinion always meant so much to me, and to have him openly disagree with me, made me question what I was doing at all.

Ominis shook his head slightly. "Usually, you know I would. Millicent, you might think this'll all pay off in the end, but how long are you going to keep taking hits for someone that won't do the same for you?" He said lowly.

His words had more of an impact when he said them so gently, in contrast to everything else he said before. I looked down at my cuticle which was now bleeding, I had picked at it during this whole conversation and hadn't noticed.

"He would. If he had the chance." I replied, but the words didn't sound all too convincing rolling off my tongue. I don't think I even believed it myself, but I thought maybe saying it out loud would make it come true. Ominis reached out and grabbed my hand, the one that was bleeding a little. He caressed his thumb on the top of my hand, looking down as if he was envisioning it.

"When reality comes to bite you, it'll be harsh. However, I'll still be here for you, when the time comes." He said before letting go of my hand, getting up, and leaving the Undercroft.
