Steph: Alright, I gotta admit, that was pretty fun. You’ve got some serious skills, Blue.
Blue: Thank you, you weren’t bad yourself.
Steph: Yeah, yeah, I know. But seriously, we should work on something together. Mrs Jennings loves it when students collaborate, and I think we could come up with something cool.
Blue: That’d be great! Maybe some time next month? I still need to get used to Blackwell
Steph: Oh yeah, we’ll talk more about it later, then.
As the class wound down, Blue found himself feeling more at ease in the room. The initial panic of being the only new student had melted away, replaced by the comfort of playing music.
For the first time since arriving at Blackwell, Blue felt like he was going to like it being a student here.
As the bell rang, signaling the end of the music lesson, students began packing up their instruments and gathering their things. Blue gently placed the acoustic guitar back on its stand, still feeling the lingering peace from the melody he had been playing.
He slung his bag over his shoulder and positioned the bag to his side, he was about to head out when Mrs Jennings approached him, her usual warm smile on her face.
Mrs Jennings: Blue, can I have a quick word before you go?
Blue: Y-Yes?
Mrs Jennings crossed her arms loosely, leaning against the desk in a relaxed posture.
Mrs Jennings: So, how was your first day here? And more importantly, how was your first music lesson?
Blue hesitated for a moment, not wanting to sound too eager, but then smiled.
Blue: I think it was great. I was nervous at first, but once I started playing, I forgot about all that. I had fun!
Mrs Jennings: That’s good to hear. It’s always a bit overwhelming being the new student, but it seems like you’ve settled in quickly. Music has a way of doing that, making everything else fade away.
Blue: Definitely. It’s like...everything else goes quiet when I’m playing, it’s just the sound, it mixes well with my ADHD
Mrs Jennings: I’m glad you feel that way. I could see it in the way you were playing, you’ve got a good ear, and your instincts are strong. Now, speaking of music, I’ve got a little task for you
Blue: [Tilts Head] Task?
Mrs Jennings: You're the only one who hasn't been told this, since you're new, but the whole class has an assignment, and I want you to do this assignment as well. They were told before the first day, so you have some catching up in a way
Blue: Okay....what is it?
Mrs Jennings: By the end of this week, I want you to bring me a track you’ve created. Something that shows me what you can do, it can be any style, whatever feels right to you. You don’t have to make it perfect, but I want to hear something original from you.
Blue’s heart skipped a beat, a mixture of excitement and nerves bubbling up inside him.
Blue: A track by the end of the week? I think I can do that!
Mrs Jennings: No pressure, but I’m looking forward to hearing it. Take your time, experiment with what you love, and don’t overthink it. You’ve got a natural gift, Blue, and I’m sure whatever you come up with will be great.
Blue: Thank you, Miss Jennings. I’ll have something ready, Soldier's Honor! Or...whatever my Dad says..
Mrs Jennings laughs softly and gives Blue a nod of encouragement before turning to gather her own things.
