The piercing sound of ambulance sirens filled the air as the medics scrambled to stabilize the critically affected members of the operation. Zara lay on a stretcher, her pale face half-covered by a nebulizer, her chest barely rising. Nancy sat beside her, clutching her hand tightly, tears streaming down her face. The resilient woman who had braved countless dangers alongside Ibrahim now looked utterly shattered.
"Zara, stay with me," Nancy whispered, her voice cracking with desperation. She gripped Zara's cold hand as if her touch alone could keep her alive. "Please, don't leave. I was supposed to protect you."
The ambulance jerked slightly as it sped toward the hospital. A medic checked Zara's vitals, shaking his head grimly. "Her oxygen levels are dangerously low. We need to get her on a ventilator as soon as possible."
Nancy's heart clenched. She had seen people fight for their lives before, but this was different. Zara wasn't just another casualty; she was someone Nancy had grown to care for, someone she felt responsible for.
Tears rolled down Nancy's cheeks as she tightened her grip. "Zara, I swear, if you pull through this, I'll never let you do anything this reckless again. You hear me? You've got too much to live for." Her voice broke. "And Ibrahim... he doesn't even know."
The medics moved quickly once the ambulance reached the hospital. A swarm of doctors and nurses was already waiting, rushing each patient into the ICU. Nancy was forced to let go of Zara's hand as they wheeled her away. She stood frozen in the hallway, watching helplessly as Zara disappeared through the double doors.
Nancy leaned against the wall outside the ward, her legs giving way beneath her. Silent sobs wracked her body as she replayed the events of the night. "I should've stopped her," she muttered to herself. "I should've done more."
From a distance, Daniel watched her, his heart breaking at the sight of Nancy—the strong, unyielding woman he admired—falling apart. He hesitated for a moment, unsure if his presence would help, but he couldn't stand by any longer. He walked over and gently placed a hand on her shoulder.
"Nancy," he said softly. "It's not your fault."
Nancy turned sharply, her tear-streaked face meeting his concerned gaze. The floodgates burst open. Without thinking, she threw her arms around him, clutching his shirt as if it were her lifeline. "I failed her, Daniel," she sobbed. "She trusted me, and now she's fighting for her life."
Daniel froze, stunned by the sudden embrace. His heart raced, but he quickly wrapped his arms around her, one hand gently rubbing her back. "Nancy, you didn't fail her," he said firmly. "You did everything you could. You're not a miracle worker."
Her sobs quieted slightly, but the pain in her chest didn't lessen. "She was so determined," Nancy whispered. "I knew it was dangerous, but I let her go through with it. If something happens to her..."
Daniel pulled back just enough to look into her eyes. "She's a fighter. And so are you. Don't lose hope now."
Their moment was interrupted by the sound of the ward doors swinging open. A doctor emerged, his expression urgent. "Who is Nancy?"
Nancy immediately stepped forward, wiping her tears. "I'm Nancy. What's wrong? Is Zara okay?"The doctor's face was grave. "Patient 206 is calling for you. Her condition is unstable, and she's asking for you."
Nancy's face went pale as she nodded. "I'm coming."
She rushed into the ICU, her heart pounding. Zara lay on the bed, surrounded by machines. Her skin was ashen, her breathing shallow, and her frail body was draped in wires and tubes. The beeping of the monitors echoed in the sterile room.
