Chapter 22

I'm running through the wooded trail by our house. Running, just like all the thoughts through my mind. Running as if to run away from them. I feel as if they can't be out ran. I stop to catch my breath. I see our house in the distance. I'm almost home. I continue to run, as I get closer I see my brother Ty sitting on the porch with Maddy. I run up to the porch and stop at the bottom step, out of breath. I walk up to my brother and sit beside him. He hands me a water. Despite his attempts to talk me into going back to California I stayed. We sit in silence for a few minutes. "Kamryn," Ty says in a concerned voice. I cut him off, as I already know what he is about to say. "Don't wanna hear it, don't want to talk about it." I say nonchalantly. "Why?" He asks. "Because, I want to be here. I can't enjoy being home? I'm not gonna let that bastard scare me out." I tell him angrily. "I get that your trying to stand your ground, but you have Maddy now. You have to think about what's best for her too. You don't know what this motherfucker is capable of. I don't know, I just want you two to be safe. And right now, safe to me is California. Have you even told Chris?" He asks. "Yes, I told him about Xavier, but I haven't gotten the chance to tell him he's back around. Chris has been busy. His assistant always answers when I call and asks me if I want to leave a message for him. I don't want to tell her my business." I tell Ty. "I hope you can tell him what's going on, soon. See what he has to say about it." He says. "Probably the same thing as you." I tell him. "Exactly my point." He gets up and hands me Maddy and walks back in the house. I look at her as she sits on my lap. Her innocentness, not a care in the world, unaware of the situation. I sit and think, damn, maybe Ty is right. I sit Maddy on the ground and make calls to arrange a flight. "Sorry ma'am, all flights to California are currently delayed until further notice." The lady tells me. Fuck. I think to myself as I hang up the phone. I go inside, Ty and Evelyn are layed up on the couch together. I sit on the love seat with Maddy. I sigh, stressed, that run didnt do anything for me, but make me think about more shit. Ty and Evelyn look at me. "Whats going on?" Ty asks. "All the flights to California are delayed until further notice." I tell him. "Damn. All we can do is wait." He tells me. I nod and I sit and watch Maddy crawl all over the place. Out of no where she stands up. She looks at me and smiles, instantly taking everything off my mind. I smile back and give her words of encouragement. She claps her little hands, applauding herself. We all laugh and clap our hands too. She falls to the ground and crawls to me. I embrace her, give her a tiny squeeze and kiss her.
The next day I go for my morning run. On the way I stop by the river and skip rocks and enjoy the sound of the water. I get back to my run, I challenge myself to make it back in under 10 minutes. I push myself, my music is motivating me more than anything. "Legend" by Drake is playing. I keep it on repeat. I finally make it to the end of the dirt road that leads up to our house. I'm out of breath, I sit down on the dirt road to catch it. After a minute or so I take my headphones out. "You okay?" I hear a male voice behind me ask. I look back to see who it is. It's Chris. I laugh. I stand up and jump on him. "Why do you always come unexpected? Were you here the whole time I've been gone?" I ask. "Because I love surprising you. Seeing you happy to see me, makes me happy. And yeah, well, I just got here like twenty minutes ago and they told me you were out on a run." He tells me then gives me a kiss. "How are you here? I thought you guys were busy filming." I question him. "Well, I got a chance to fly out and I took it. They're having technical difficulties and they're filming scenes that I'm not in. I got approved for a short break." He tells me. We walk to the house. "I have something to tell you." I say. "What's that?" He asks. I tell him about Xavier being back in town and I tell him that I tried catching a flight back to California, but all the flights were delayed. "I could get a private jet to come out, but I don't think it'd get here till tomorrow." He tells me. "That's fine. How come you couldn't tell me that before?" I ask. "Because I'm just now finding all this out." He replies. "If your ass would answer your phone instead of your assistant all the time, you'd have known sooner." I tell him. "I'll make that call right now." He says. We get to the house and he makes the call. Ty is grilling on the back patio. I go to see him as Chris makes the call. I sit with Evelyn at the table on the patio. We visit, Keri is bringing the side dishes out. She asks me and Evelyn to set the table. We do, I make lemonade when we finish. I check my phone and social media sites, I see some friends, from here in town, playfully trash talking me about making it on Kevin Durant's summer league, they challenge me to come down to the basketball courts and prove myself. I accept, obviously. After this delightful meal, of course. Chris comes outside with Maddy and joins us. We say a prayer over the meal and eat. We finish and I tell them that I'm going in town to play ball. Ty and Chris look at each other. "I don't know Kam, I think you should take someone with you." Ty says concerned. "Why dont you two come?" I ask. Looking at Ty and Chris. "Sure I'll come." Chris agrees. "No, stay here and spend time with Maddy." Keri cuts him off. "I can't go, I got to run my work car back up to the city and clock out." Ty says. He works as a Marine recruiter in the city. "I could have my security come down, but it'll be an hour before they get here." Chris suggests. I get a text from my friend, Dreau.
Dreau: You coming or you bailing? We're all here waiting.
Fuck. I think. "No I got to go now." I say in a hurry. "Me and Ev will go." Keri and Evelyn agree to go. "I don't know, you guys are weaklings." Ty says. "Don't underestimate." Keri threatens. Ty backs up slowly as if to surrender. "Well I got to go, I'll be back in an hour or so." Ty leaves. I go in the back and change into a black cut off tank, a sports bra, and ball shorts. I give Chris and Maddy a kiss before I leave. Me, Keri, and Evelyn head down to the courts. We're down there for about an hour and a half, I win my game and we begin our walk home. We stop at the store for something to drink. I have a hard time picking what I want, Keri and Evelyn are ready to leave. I tell them to just go ahead and I'll catch up. I end up buying two blue Gatorade's and a big bottle of water. I stop and talk to and old friend for a few minutes and head home. I have to walk outside of town, across a high way, and on to a dirt road that leads to my house, which is a couple miles out. It's a good nature walk, the dirt road is surrounded by trees, pretty much a wooded area. I make it on to the dirt road when I see a car stop and pull over. I put my head phones in and continue to walk, I figure it just a passerby with a car problem. I look back to see if they might need any help, I'm about 40 or 50 yards away. I see someone sitting on the hood of the car. I get a better look. It's Xavier.
Shit. I pick up my speed. I call Keri. "Kam." She says when she answers her phone. "Where the fuck are you?" I ask. "Almost home. Why?" She asks. "Xavier is following me." I tell her. "Shit! Ev, run and see if Ty is home, tell him to come quick. Run!" I hear her yell to Evelyn. "I'm coming Kam!" She hangs up. Fuck. I continue to power walk. He catches up to me. "Haven't seen you in forever." He says. I remain silent and continue to walk. "Your not talking to me? That's fine. I hear you got a baby. And a new man. Could've been me, huh?" He says. I ignore him. He laughs. "So, did you rat me out to the cops?" He asks. "No, leave me alone." I say nonchalantly. "I was in prison for 5 years, all I thought about was you. I mean, yeah, I got a new girl, but she ain't shit. I want you. What do you say?" He says. "Something is really wrong with you. You're fucked in the head. Leave me the fuck alone." I tell him. "Mmm, no." He says in an asshole voice. I run. Fast. I don't look back. He catches up to me. He grabs me and we fall to the ground. We roll down a hill. He hits me. I block it and hit him. I kick him in the balls and he falls off of me. I look back and see him on the ground, I kick him in the head. I get up and run as fast as I can. I don't make it back up the hill in time. He catches and throws me to the ground. "If I can't have you, nobody can." He stabs me in my chest. Again in my right side, I struggle to get away. I hit him and throw dirt in his face. He's unfazed. During my attempt to get away he stabs me in my collar bone and shoulder. He stabs me a few more times, but I have too much adrenaline to feel where. All of a sudden I see him fall to the ground. I get up to run. I only get so far before I collapse in the road. I look up. Keri is standing over me. "Kamryn, I'm sorry, I should have waited. I should have waited. HELP! HURRY!" She screams for help. She sits down and puts my head in her lap. I notice that it's hard to breathe. I feel like I'm drowning. I feel the urge to cough, its as if, when you take a drink of something and you drink too fast that it goes into your lungs. I cough and cough. I feel something warm coming out of my mouth as I cough. Keri wipes it off and I look, its blood. I have a hard time catching my breath. "Breathe Kam." She tells me. I try. "I can't." I tell her. I squeeze her hand and begin to cry. "HELP!!" She screams for help again. I hear Ty's ATV's near by. I also hear sirens. Keri is talking to me but I can't understand her. She sounds far away. "Kamryn, wake up!" I hear Ty. Their voices become clear. I look everything looks blurry. "Baby." I hear Chris. I realize he's carrying me. I touch his face. My hand leaves blood on his face. I drift away again. I come to and I'm in the ambulance. "She's losing blood, and fast." I hear someone say. They're standing over me, trying to talk to me. I can't answer. I drift. All of a sudden I'm home. In my back yard. I see Chris and Maddy playing in the fields behind my house. I look back and see my mom and dad standing on the patio. "Mom? Dad?" I say confused. "Kam!" My dad's deep voice says excitedly. I begin to walk up to them. "No, Kam, stay there." My dad urges. I stop in my steps. "I miss you guys. I love you both." I begin to cry. "We miss and love you too baby." My mom replies. "Of course. I'm proud of the woman you've become Kam. Keep it up." My dad tells me. I cry. "Your family needs you. Now turn around and go give that baby girl kisses for us." He says. I turn and begin walking towards Chris and Maddy. I feel awake but I can't open my eyes. I just hear people talking. "Her lung was pierced. She has a broken rib, the tissue and tendons surrounding the rib is damaged. Her collar bone is cut and the tendon is damaged as well. We repaired all the damaged tissue from the other wounds. She went with out oxygen for a while, she flatlined on the operating table. She's lucky to have made it in time. We did everything we could. All we can do is wait. She's in a medically induced coma, we expect her to come around in 3 to 5 days, but only time will tell." I hear them say. I drift again. All of a sudden I hear my brother Ty talking to me. "I remember this time when we were younger, kids still, we were swimming at the local pool and some big bully picks on me, drowning me. You grab me as I'm being drown and pull me to safety. You start talking shit to him, not giving a fuck how big this dude is. You stood up for me. I'll never forget that. Damn. Kam, I told you not to go. I told you. I knew I should've went to check on you when I pulled in to town." He begins to cry. "It's not your fault," Keri says. "It's mine. I should've waited for her at the store." She says. "It's no ones fault. Kamryn was just being Kamryn. Keri, if you didn't get there when you did, we'd be at a funeral right now. I'm glad that motherfucker got what he deserved, they need to keep his ass in prison this time. I know Kam was fighting back the whole time." I hear Evelyn say. Everything goes quiet. I come to and I here the TV. I open my eyes. They're having a hard time adjusting to the sunlight so I close them again for a moment. I open them and see Chris sitting by my bed. He looks bored, watching TV. He doesn't realize I'm awake. I see Keri sleeping on a couch in the room. I feel parched. I try to rip the oxygen mask off my face. I startle Chris, he looks at me. "No, no, no. Leave it on." He puts it back on my face. I see him push the button to call the nurse. "Water." I croak. "The nurse is coming." He tells me. I hear a knock at the door. "Someone called?" I here a female voice. She appears from behind the curtain. "She's awake. How are you feeling ma'am?" She asks. "Thirsty." I reply in a raspy voice. "Okay I'll get you water in a minute. Are you feeling dizzy?" She asks. I shake my head. "Do you have a headache?" She asks. I shake my head again.
"Nausea?"
"No."
"Breathing okay?"
I nod.
"Okay, I'll let the doctor know you're awake. In the meantime, I'll get you that water."
I nod again.
She leaves. Chris is watching me. He sits on the side of the bed. "Do you remember me?" He asks. "Shuttup. Yes. A piece of my brain isn't missing." I tell him. He laughs. "I know, I was joking." He says. "How long has it been?" I ask.
"Four days."
"I was asleep for four days?"
"They put you in a medically induced coma."
"Why?"
"Because, you needed time to recover. You lost a lot of blood Kam."
"I did?"
"Yeah, there was a puddle of blood where you collapsed. You stopped breathing on the way to the hospital and flatlined. Twice. They didn't think you were gonna make it." His voice sounds shaky.
"I made it. I'm here." I try to console him.
"I think we just need to get married as soon as possible. I don't want to waste anymore time." He grabs my hand and kisses it.
"Okay."
"You don't have to worry or stress about the planning, I know you got the majority of it done. Just leave the rest to me."
"Are you sure? Get my fuckin fried chicken on the menu."
He laughs. "For sure."
"That's all I ask. Well where's that nurse bitch with my water?"
He bursts into laughter. "Theres Kamryn. Your so rude."
"She's rude. I'm dehydrated in here."
Ty and Evelyn walk in the room. Evelyn gasps. "She lives." Evelyn says. "I knew you'd snap out of it." Ty adds.
I just smile. "Your story was on the news. He went down for attempted murder." Ty tells me. "I gave my phone to my manager. I keep getting calls. They want me to give a statement about the situation. I told them to just respect our privacy during this time." Chris tells me. "Ellen called." He adds. "Whaaat? You know I love her." I say. "I know. She asked if we could come on the show when you feel.. Up to it." He tells me. "Absolutely, you ain't got to ask me twice." I say. "Shit, we could go right now." I joke. We laugh. "You're sure about this Kamryn?" Ty asks. "Yeah,
I dont mind telling my story." I reply. "I had a dream about mom and dad. They were standing on the back patio watching Chris and Maddy play in the fields. I tried walking to give them a hug. Dad stopped me and told me to stay. He said he's proud of the woman I've become and to give Maddy kisses." I tell them. We sit in silence for a few minutes. I look at Ty and he has tears in his eyes. "Kam." He pauses, trying to keep his composure. "Ahem. You, umm.. Your heart stopped twice." He tells me. "I know, Chris told me." I reply. "You don't think that was really them, do you? Like, you were trying to pass on, but dad wouldn't let you." He asks. "That's what I was thinking. Everything seemed so real." I reply. We begin to cry. The nurse finally comes in with my water, but she sees us having a moment and tries to leave. Chris takes the water. "I'm trying to fucking sleep here." Keri says still laying on the couch with the blankets over her head. "I'm awake you fucker." I say. "Kamryn?" She sits up.

It's been two months now that me and Chris have been married and 6 months since the incident. We're backstage of the Ellen show. We're watching a little TV that shows us whats going on out on stage. They take us by the entrance to the stage. "Please welcome Chris Pratt and his wife Kamryn." Ellen says. The crowd applauses. We hear "Yeah" by Usher playing as we come out. We have to dance as we come out. I couldn't dance if my life depended on it, but I don't give a fuck, I dance for Ellen. We greet her and she gives us a hug. We sit down. "I've met Chris already. I never got to meet you. Nice to finally meet you. Chris, you've done well." She says. The audience and Chris laugh.
"Ohh for sure." Chris agrees. "Luckiest and happiest man in the world." He says.
"So how did you two meet?" She asks.
"Uhm, I was actually doing an appearance in her hometown, just, you know, talking to the kids about saying no to drugs and staying in school. It's a really small town, everybody knows everybody. Not my typical gig, but anything for the kids. The event was being held at her work site then. She was actually, you know, my driver that day. I didn't bring anybody with me or tell anybody I was doing an appearance there, I figured I'd just do my part and then catch the next flight out. We ended up clicking and I stayed." He says.
"Well good thing you went." She jokes and looks at me. Chris and the audience laugh.
"Most definitely." He puts his arm around me.
"Kamryn, what were you doing before you met Chris?"
"I was just working as a park ranger then. I had just graduated with a degree in nursing."
"Really? Congratulations." She says. The audience claps.
"Thank you." I reply.
"So, you were working as a park ranger, how did you get stuck driving Chris?" She asks. The audience laughs.
"Uhm, my boss actually came up to me a few days before and asked me. It's usually slow at work and there's not much to do, so I agreed to do it." I tell her.
"Also, congratulations to you guys on your marriage." She says. There's a picture from our wedding of me and Chris kissing after saying our "I do's." on the screen in the background and a small screen in front of us.
"Thank you" we both say.
"And you have a baby girl together? Madeline?"
We see a picture of Madeline, from Chris' instagram.
"Yeah, we all call her Maddy for short. She's a sweetheart. She's actually starting to talk now. Like, she's putting sentences together well. The other day I asked for a kiss. She said 'no daddy, I don't want to.' She broke my heart. I still love her though." He tells her.
"Sweetheart, huh?" Ellen jokes. The audience laughs. "I'm kidding, I'm sure she is. She's adorable." She adds.
"Thank you." We both say.
"Do you plan on having another baby? She asks.
Me and Chris look at each other. "We're working on it." Chris tells her.
"I'll be the first to know, right?" She asks.
"For sure. Got you on speed dial." He jokes. The audience laughs.
"I better be." She jokes. The audience laughs again. "Chris, you just finished filming Guardians of the Galaxy 2. Congratulations on that, as well. It isn't set to come out until next year, 2017." The audience applauses. "What are you doing now?" She asks.
"Thank you. Uhm, I'm on a little hiatus, I guess. I'm using my down time to work on my current project with Kamryn. We're traveling the country to speak with youth about dating violence awareness." He tells her.
"Kamryn, I hear you've been a victim of dating violence. Would you mind sharing your story?" She asks.
"Sure. Uhm, I was in high school when I was dating this person. Everything was fine at the beginning of our relationship. Until one day he hit me. He apologized and I forgave. This went on for about 2 years. I was young, you know, I thought I was in love. I look back and ask myself why I let myself think that. He bought me a dog that I named Rocky. I instantly fell in love with him. We were inseparable. Rocky got killed for trying to protect me. After that I tried ending the relationship. But my ex wasn't having it, he beat me, and locked me in his room for 3 days. My family was out looking for me. They couldn't find me. One of my brothers finally found out where my ex lived and came and got me. My ex held my brother at gunpoint. My brother was able to get the gun from him. He told my ex to never bother me again. And after that I never heard from him again. A few months later I found out he'd gone to prison for selling drugs and a bunch of other things." I tell her. Chris is rubbing my back trying to comfort me.
"I'm so sorry to hear about your dog. And I'm sorry you had to go through that. No woman should be disrespected, mistreated, or have hands put on her. Every woman should be treated like a queen." The audience agrees and applauses. "I have to ask, Why didn't you call the police and press charges?"
"Well, because I didn't want my father or anyone to know what had happened. I made my brother promise not to tell anyone. He was my protector."
"Ok. And this man was the same man from the recent incident? Can you tell us what happened then?"
I tell her what happened. She looks shocked. "I really am sorry this happened to you. I just want to tell you that you are not a victim, you are a survivor. And I admire your strength and courage to want to tell others your story. Thank you guys for being with us and I wish you the best of luck on your journey to get your story out. I hope to see you guys again soon." She says as the show wraps we get up to give her a hug. My sister Keri brings Madeline out to meet her. The show ends.
