30: Backstabber

Peeking inside the classroom, Khushi found everyone asleep. Peaceful breathing wafting in the air. Hiding the shard, she stepped in.

Badri laid in the extreme corner, snoring like a tractor caught in the mud. She crouched beside him and waved her hand above his face. He did not give a response. Relieved, she stood up to discover that his best friend was not there.

She glanced at the blackboard, noticing the wiped chalk residue against the green. Someone had doodled a smiling sun in the corner.

Turning around, she closed the door and left.

Shifting to his other side, Badri opened his eyes and whisperer,

"Budh?"

He was missing. Feeling that he was sleepwalking again, he hurried to the door and closed it behind him.

The bathroom door creaked open. Saira wiped the perspiration off her face and whispered,

"Coast all clear?"

Khushi nodded, staring at the paper cutter in her hand and speaking snarkily,

"That's all you got?"

"Fabulous isn't it?" She showed it to her.

"Let's go"

They sneaked out of the bathroom and walked through the corridor, footsteps echoing across the premises. Khushi went on confidently, boasting about her impossible ways of saving and rescuing. Saira paid her no attention. The sound of rustling trees gave some company against the quiet.

"Have you spilled out to anyone?" hummed Khushi.

"No" she lied, "I bet Badri and Budh knows by now because of you"

"Pure cap" She smirked, "You shouldn't even ask me this, single eyelash"

She skidded to a halt and sneered, "Excuse me?!"

"For someone who doesn't have the balls to tell anyone" she gave her a side eye, "They should keep silent"

"What did you say about me?" She squeezed her arm, ready to lash out one final condescending answer when she heard footsteps from a distance. Feeling alarmed, she pulled Khushi back.

"What the-?"

"Shhhhhhh" she warned and pointed at the other end.

Karan was sauntering outside, humming and perfecting his hair on the glass notice board.

"Arre" Khushi gritted his teeth, "Who's gonna tell him that's not his vanity mirror?"

"You said coast was clear!" Saira hissed back, "How careless! Well, expected from yuh"

She turned around to leave.

"Shut up and follow me" Saira dictated and pulled her back.

Hearing the greeting behind, Karan discovered the two girls smiling back at him. Saira put her arms behind and shook side to side and asked,

"What happened Karan? You're not asleep?"

"Someone else ain't sleepy either eh?" He chuckled.

"Oh ya..." she chuckled too, "We were just taking a tiny walk"

"This place seems to have got tiny" he leaned on the mirror, "Weird, but who cares"

"Won't you sleep Karan?"

"I can't, really" he caressed his hair and looked at the noticeboard again, "I get energetic in the middle of the night" 

"Oh?"
