The mall food court bustled with noise and laughter, but Adrienne, her mom, and Wyatt were tucked in a cozy corner, sharing a round table laden with Chinese takeout containers. Wyatt giggled as he fumbled with chopsticks, his small hands trying to mimic his mom’s movements. Her mom chuckled, leaning over to guide his fingers, and Adrienne, only half-focused, slurped her noodles and watched the scene.

Her mom laughed at something Wyatt said and then turned to Adrienne with a warm smile. “So, how’s the noodle and dumpling soup? You like it?”

Adrienne shrugged, swallowing a bite. “Yeah, it’s good.”

“It’s a little too peppery for me,” her mom said, wrinkling her nose playfully. “You know, I could call the waiter—maybe get it a bit spicier for you?”

Adrienne quickly shook her head. “No, mom, it’s fine. I’m good.” She gave a small, polite smile before looking back down at her food. Her mom noticed the way Adrienne’s gaze seemed distant, her usual spark dimmed.

After a few moments, her mom cleared her throat, trying to keep the tone light. “Hey, you know, I found that candle you’ve always wanted—the one that smells like the beach house in Cancun? And the one that smells like bread and marshmallows, remember?” She smiled at Adrienne. “You loved those when you were younger.”

Adrienne looked up, her eyes softening. “Thanks, mom. That’s… that’s really sweet.”

Her mom nodded to herself, a warm smile spreading across her face. “Yeah, no problem, honey.” She turned her attention to Wyatt, who was now poking his sprinkles with the chopsticks instead of using them to pick up the food. With a little chuckle, she said, “baby, do you still need help with those chopsticks?”

Wyatt shook his head, a bit embarrassed. “No, thank you, Mommy.”

“Alright, alright.” She laughed softly, leaning back. For a few minutes, the three of them continued eating in companionable silence, but Adrienne’s mom seemed to be gathering her thoughts. Finally, she took a deep breath, deciding to just go for it.
