Rayla perched atop Onyx, the Shadowpaw, as they traversed the familiar landscapes of the human kingdom, the scent of pine and earth mingling with the sweetness of blooming flowers in the air. Onyx’s powerful legs propelled them forward, each stride filled with purpose as they neared the Moonstone Path.
“We should reach the Moonstone Path by tonight,” she said, glancing back at Callum, who rode closely behind on a sleek black horse.
“I remember crossing it a few years ago,” he replied, a mix of nostalgia and concern in his voice. “The glowing runes, the floating rocks… it was breathtaking but also unnerving.”
Rayla nodded, recalling their previous journey across the Moonstone Path. “We know what to expect this time, but we still need to be cautious. It’s only safe to cross when the moonlight makes the runes visible. If we miss that window, we could easily find ourselves in trouble.”
As they pressed on, the forest began to thin, and soon the terrain opened up to reveal the rugged cliffs leading to the Moonstone Path. The air felt charged with magic, a sensation that always accompanied the path. They could see the faint outline of the floating rocks ahead, their surfaces glinting in the dappled sunlight.
“I see it,” Callum said, a hint of excitement creeping into his voice. “We made it.”
Rayla urged Onyx forward, and they approached the edge of the cliff, gazing down at the flowing river of lava below. The weak current allowed the series of floating rocks to emerge from the depths, forming a precarious path across the molten landscape. Each rock was adorned with moon runes, their glow hidden for now under the sun's light.
“Let’s find a suitable place to wait until nightfall,” Rayla suggested, scanning the area for a safe spot. They maneuvered along the cliffside until they found a small grove where they could rest and prepare for their crossing.
As the sun dipped lower in the sky, the world around them began to shift. The warm hues of daylight slowly faded, giving way to the cool blue tones of evening. Rayla felt the familiar sense of anticipation build within her as the moon began to rise.
“Soon,” she murmured, watching as the first silver light spilled across the landscape. The rocks began to shimmer, the moon runes illuminating the path ahead.
“It's beautiful,” Callum whispered, his gaze fixed on the glowing stones. “I almost forgot how magical this place is.”
“It is,” Rayla agreed, her heart swelling with a mix of wonder and trepidation. “But we must remember—this beauty comes with its own risks.”
As darkness settled over the land, the path transformed into a mesmerizing trail of glowing stones. They stepped forward cautiously, Rayla leading the way. The first rock sank slightly beneath her weight, reassuring her that the runes were still active, guiding them across.
The sounds of the lava river below echoed ominously, a reminder of the danger that lay just out of sight. With each step, the stones shifted gently beneath their feet, creating an eerie rhythm that added to the tension of the moment.
“Stay close,” Rayla instructed, her voice steady despite the uncertainty swirling in her gut. “Follow my lead.”
Callum nodded, focusing on the path ahead. The moonlight illuminated their way, casting long shadows that danced across the rocks. Each rune glowed with a soft, ethereal light, creating a path that felt almost alive.
As they reached the midpoint of the crossing, Rayla paused, glancing back to ensure Callum was still with her. “How are you holding up?”
“Doing alright,” he replied, his expression determined. “Just a little unnerving, that’s all.”
