i held gab while she sobbed into my lap. my heart broke for her, watching her break down like this. this was just another tuesday to me, but gab has never experienced the loss of a human life at her hand.

if you ask me, a bullet was too easy. he deserved to suffer more. he meant nothing.

her fragility was painfully evident to me as her tears soaked through the fabric of my pant leg.

"i'm just as bad as him. i killed him. i'm a killer" her voice broke as she spoke the words. words she couldn't fathom were coming out of her mouth.

"you're not a killer, gab. you didn't just kill someone, you protected yourself, you protected us. was was going to hurt you if you didn't take action. it was self defence" i continued to drill that into her head, she did what she had to.

i didn't even see it coming, especially not from gab. i was waiting for him to let his guard down for just a second so i could blam him, but gab took it into her own hands.

"what do i do now?" she asked, her voice fostering a sense of hopelessness.

"be free, he can't hurt you anymore. he's gone" i reminded her

i could feel the weight of her pain, the gravity of her actions causing her severe distress. i was so jaded to this life that i almost forgot this is how a normal person would react.

she was like a dove for me in this moment, reminding me that good, innocent people still exist. since the second i met her she'd been cracking away at my hardened exterior and right now i just wanted to do anything i could to take her pain away.

"i know he was horrible, and he did horrible things to me. he was still someone's child, brother, friend" she said, her conscious weighing heavily on her.

ruby chimed in from the front seat, "it was us vs. them gabi, if you didn't pull the trigger it would have been scrim or i. you simply just went along with the inevitable"

"he's right sweetheart, do not try to turn yourself into a villain here. his fate was already sealed" i continued to pet her head, strands of her burgundy-brunette hair slipped through my fingers.

"gabi, you've been through more in the past weeks than most people will go through in their lifetime. you're a good person, a strong person. there's no normal way to feel right now" ruby said, he spoke with a little more heart than he typically would. usually the blunt voice of reason, being the conscious over my shoulder.

she nodded, barely able to force a small smile through her tears. "thanks ruby" she whispered.

"but what happens now?" she asked, still feeling like her world was altered permanently.

"nothing, or everything. the earth will keep turning baby, but you no longer have to feel imprisoned to him. the earth will keep turning and you're safe, you're free, whatever you want to happen will happen, i'll make sure of it" i told her, using my finger to lift her chin towards me "i promise".

her weight shifted in my lap, attempting to sit herself up beside me. i aided her up, she still clung to my side.

she took control of her breath for a moment, pursing her lips like she was thinking. tears still dripping from her eyes which had become red and puffy from the stinging tears.

she reached to her neck, tugging on the delicate silver chain of the necklace that i had retrieved for her.

the sharp motion broke the clasp, the piece of metal falling into her hands.
