Rain jolted awake, finding himself exactly where he drifted off last night. Yawning, he blinked, trying to get his eyes adjusted to the bright light. The golden sunbeams fell on the mighty, tall rock of the Star Stones, but it seemed different now. He examined the rock as he slowly pushed himself to his feet, ignoring the pain that came with it.

Grazing the cold surface of the rock with his paw, he stared at it thoughtfully. How come it looks so different at night? The huge rock wasn't nearly as bright as yesterday; it almost seemed blank and like a regular rock with a bit of a difference.

"It only shines at night. This place is called Star Stones for a reason." Smoke's meow made him jump. She guessed my thoughts perfectly...Rain chuckled to himself in amusement.

"Good morning, Smokey!" He turned around, flashing a grin towards her. He knew too well that this nickname would set her off, but he was doing it on a purpose.

Sure enough, the blue-gray she-cat groaned in annoyance. "My StarClan, don't ever call me that again." She rolled her eyes at Rain, who only shrugged.

"I can't promise anything!" He winked, padding closer to her. But deep down, he felt something strange in her reply. The orange tom replayed her sentence over and over again, but he couldn't quite place what was wrong with it. I'm probably just overthinking, he shrugged it off.

"Whatever." Smoke sighed, but her gaze betrayed that she wasn't really mad at him. She hooked a mouse from between her claws and tossed it towards him. "I figured that you would be hungry when you wake up." She commented, turning away from him to watch the sunrise.

Rain's stomach began growling; he hadn't realized how hungry he was until the sweet scent of the fresh-kill reached his nostrils. "Thanks!" He called to Smoke as he crouched down, sinking his teeth into the warm flesh of the mouse. I haven't eaten since we left the barn, he realized with dismay. Maybe I was just too excited to be hungry.

"Look at you," The blue-gray she-cat turned her head around to look at him. "You said thank you for something. Maybe this is a sign of personality growth!" She remarked, sarcasm dripping from her tone.

Rain stifled a small smile. "Maybe." He answered, licking the remains of the mouse from his whiskers. Standing up, he shook out his orange fur. "Come on, let's go."

"And where exactly?" Surprise appeared on Smoke's face as she faced him. Rain studied her for a few heartbeats instead of answering. How can I tell her that I met a ghost who told me that I need to go back to PineClan? How would she react to all of this? She did know a thing or two about those Clans, and Rain was fully aware of this. She would surely understand.

"To the Clans." The orange tom replied casually, just like he was telling her about the weather or something as trivial as that. A burst of energy washed over him, sending fire through every hair of his pelt. Because I'm a PineClan cat, and my Clan needs me. And I will protect it with my life if I have to, he thought, proudly puffing out his chest. Nothing and no one can stop me.

Rain thought he was prepared for how Smoke would react. He thought that she would be surprised and desperate to know what happened. Or maybe she would be angry, who knows? But the expression on the blue-gray she-cat's face was beyond all of his expectations.
